There are 4 different 1.9 diesel engines in the pre 04 model a non turbo, and 3 turbos (90, 110, 130 bhp). So you need to be clear which it is.0

Had one of the early 1999 Octavia Estates (1.9TDi). Was a fantastic car, reliable, well put together, good dealer service, economical (50+mpg on mixed use). Should never have sold it for a Passat...
Same here, owned it from 3 years to 10 years old, put another 86k on it, from the 100k it came with. Only really wear and tear things. Clutch latest till 140k. Was still getting 50+mpg from it, high 60's on a long run taking it steady, wish I had never sold it, and really wish I'd never replaced it with a Citreon.. but that is a different story all together. There are 4 different 1.9 diesel engines in the pre 04 model a non turbo, and 3 turbos (90, 110, 130 bhp). I had the 90bhp turbo, service every 10k, and I'd do an oil/filter change in between each service, so easy to change the oil on it yourself. Never missed a beat.. If I wasn't having an early mid-life crisis and got a Subaru Forester, I'd have got another octavia..0 -
Nice and easy to work on, cheap enough parts, and decent runners. Looked at buying one a few years back, but got tempted by another car... Cheap enough insurance if I remember as well.0

Estates for fishing eh??
Renault megane, Astra est, VWPassat, Honda accord, Vectra/Insignia and of course the Ford .
The Octavia beats them all on paper but for me the Renault wins, unless you need the 4 wheel drive capability of the 4x4 Octavia, but boy, does that come at a priceI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Second vote for the Renault - Laguna estate. I'd recommend at least trying one on a test drive.
We looked long and hard at the Octavia, but after a lot of test drives, found we preferred the Renault - the Octavia seemed not to have as clear a view to the rear, due to the rear door pillars. We've been absolutely delighted with our Laguna, and had no problems to date, but one thing we picked up when researching is you need to go for a post 2004 model if you're considering one, as earlier models had problems.Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0 -

Yup
Renault stated to use semi synthetic oil and have service intervals of 19k which caused the turbo's to go bang.
They revised this to use fully synthetic oil and reduced the service interval to 12k and went a long way to resolve the issue
I've just sold my renault Sport Clio 197 (2.0l 197bhp) for a Laguna hatchback due to having a child
I've got the 1.9 dci 120bhp, it's got 155k on the clock and it runs flawlessly, extremely cheap to run and does the deed when the loud pedal is pressed
Overall i'm over the moon with it seeing as i paid just £1495 for a 52 plateIf Adam and Eve were created first
.Does that mean we are all inbred0 -

Yep' I can 2nd that, I looked long and hard (oops), when I wanted an estate for family stuff and fishing. I went for the Megane estate as it was a far better speked car than the focus and astra I tried, and believe it or not had a greater load capacity than the Laguna:TI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

We are on our 2nd Octavia 1.9 Tdi Elegance 130 bhp and have had it for four years with no problems. My Machanic likes them as they are easier to work on than most cars.
We are looking at a VRS and also the Yeti too........ One of my pet hates are badge snobs, when we first got out Octavia one took the p1ss out of it and he had a Rover 200 ......I use to chuckle when he ws underneath it most weekends....0 -
Ask any mechanic if they like Renault or working on them and you will get the same answer 99 times out of 100. Unfortunately mechanics see a lot of them ! I am an ex Renault owner and it is an experience that I will never repeat.
There is simply no comparison Renault/Skoda, one has reliable cars that are easy to fix if need be and dealers that are helpful !0
