Is the terrible "John Frieda Hair Dye Mousse" fit for purpose?

  • I've used these and they are ok - I haven't had any problems, but then I am colouring it dark brown.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it dyes your head as well not just the hair. L'Oreal doesn't so I think that I will go back to using that one.

Haven't tried the Perfect 10 range - maybe I will give that one a bash as well.

to me, it doesn't fade any quicker than any other dye
  • Thanks to all those who replied. Just to make a few points clearer:

    1) I am not aiming at compensation. I just find it wrong for a product to be so off...

    2) I was not going to write any formal letter being emotional. But, as all women know, an unflattering hair shade CAN ruin a special occasion, and our hair is important to us. I was letting some steam off here :)

    3) I've been dyeing my hair for many years, so I have a lot of experience. Maybe I did not explain my hair shade correctly: it was light auburn with some blonde highlights in it already. In terms of shade number (the lighter the hair, the higher the number usually), it was a 7.50 or an 8 already. So, I did not try to lighten my hair more than two shades. I just tried to give more emphasis to the blonde. I didn't expect to become blonde, but becoming dark brown from light blonde-auburn using a number 8 golden blonde shade is definitely something no other dye has managed to do so far; and I have tried in my time more brands than you can think of, some salon exclusive.

This is the reason I didn't do a strand test, but I take your point that since the companies cover their @sses by stating it, any formal complaint will be pointless.

    4) From all the other complaints I have read at reviewcentre.com it seems that the problem occurs with the light shades only. Some examples:

"My hair was a dark blond but the grey was starting to appear. I tried Natural Light Brown to give it more colour. What a disaster, it is very very dark brown"

"I used the medium blonde and it sent me quite a lot darker."

"...made my hair come out not the right colour[;] bad product never use it again[;] i been dyeing my hair for 10 years and done hair dressing for 5 years"

"I had a beautiful light golden brown hair colour but I had a few grey hairs at the temple and forhead[...] I chose the Light Golden Brown which really was such a close match to my own natural colour on the box. I followed the instructions to the letter and found like other people the colour was not what was promised.
It is now a dark brown with red hues to it..."

    And so on.

So, thanks for sharing your opinion and for pointing out that the company advises for a strand test, so even if you did one, it is *impossible* in a complaint to prove you did or didn't. I still believe this is a very bad product that produces random colour shades. As for their coupon for another foam dye, I may keep it and give it to a blonde I dislike >:) There is no way I'm going near this product again!
  • I have to agree that this product is not fit for purpose and come to the defence of the lady who started this conversation. It is awful stuff, as I found to my cost last week. I bought the light golden brown, nearest to my own colour, did do a strand test (which looked OK) but the dye en-masse on the head came out a completely different colour. I had previously used other dyes this colour with no problems apart from some patchiness (which is what John Frieda heavily advertise this one not to do). I turned out a darkish red brown, very hard, very artificial looking, very aging and very upsetting, especially as I've spent the last year going gradually lighter to a light golden brown colour. This is not even a gold tint, its bright red! The strand test did look more gold and so I went on with it. I have never had such a disaster with a hairdye, will never use it again, it has cost me money at the hairdressers to strip out, redye and deep condition. I got no response to emails from John Frieda, I phoned and told someone would ring back several times, but never did. The manufacturers have proved equally unobtainable. Please, do yourself a favour, dont take any chances with this terrible hair dye.
  • I used the Deep Cherry Brown John Freida mouse, loved it. Maybe the darks work better

There is now on the market a brilliant product called "COLOUR B4" you can buy this from Superdrug and Boots, this product strips the colouring build up from your hair, changing it back to your natural colour, it is available in two strengths, I have used the higher strength one twice now, and it is brilliant, it would have costed me a fortune in the hairdressers. It costs £12.99.

All you have to do is spread it right through your hair, the application bottle is similar to what you normally use when colouring your hair. Leave it on for 25 minutes, and then stand in a shower for at least 10 minutes, it does reccomend 20 minutes, it is the rinsing of the hair that gets rid of the colouring, so if you have the patience (I don't) spend as long as you can under the shower. Then you wash your hair twice with the special buffering shampoo that is supplied.

It dosent harm the hair, and once you have dried your hair you can colour it again.
  • Mum had her hair coloured at the salon, she has been going to for years, and when the girl brought out the dye my mum asked if it was the correct one as the colour of it was different.

The girl tried to fob my mum off, as she was applying it, but in the end - when half of it had been applied - my mum insisted that she checked. Two minutes later all hell broke out as the mistake was realised (they'd transposed a number or something stupid) and they tried to rectify it.

The end result was a very nice brown but not for a 60 year old woman!

The only bit that made me cross was that mum still paid for it!

My natural colour's gone a long time ago, after years of hair dying! So, I'm not sure how this product will work on me. Would it bring back the colour before the most recent dye?

Colour B4 has mixed reviews, and just like any colour stripper, it does damage your hair. According to your OP you have already paid to correct it anyway?
    Gone ... or have I?

I bought a bottle of this product before Xmas in order to use it during the holidays. For those who are not familiar with it, it is supposed to be an "innovative" hair dye, in mousse instead of cream form. You can find more info here: www.johnfrieda.co.uk/homecolour/

The use of the mousse was easy. BUT: My hair was auburn. I tried 8G (golden blonde) and got dark brown-reddish hair  I thought something was wrong, because when I mixed the dye, the colour was dark brown and not yellow as it normally is with lighter shades, but a) I am no expert and b) I thought that because it's a mousse, maybe it works in a different way. It was just before Xmas and I was so disappointed. The result literally ruined my holidays. Plus, I had to pay 70 pounds a couple of weeks ago to correct it :(

I complained to the company (KAO Brands Company) via email and they did not even reply. I only received through mail a voucher for 2 pounds off my next buy (yeah, as if). No apology, not a word  What a nerve.

I had a look at a site named reviewcentre.com and found out (too little too late) that a LOT of women had the same problems with the lighter shades.

So, my question is: is this product supposed to be "fit for purpose" with results such as that? Should I contact Trading Standards? Compensation is not my aim; I would really like to see the rest of the consumers protected from this product and this company.

THANKS in advance for your thoughts.

Hi, was your hair already dyed brown?
  • If the dye was a different shade to what it says on the box then it isn't fit for purpose, personally. It should be roughly how it is on the box, and it seems to me it was totally different :| well that's just crap. I'd be annoyed, too. I am a dirty blonde colour and once I went to dye mine lighter and it went a really awful ginger colour, and I wasn't a happy bunny.

However, I do agree with what some have said here, because technically, if you didn't do the strand test like you was recommended to, then your complaint may not be taken seriously. But I myself do genuinely understand how you must have felt because I've been through it myself, and I felt equally as annoyed. I'd follow through with the complaint, because you aren't happy and you spent money on something that you weren't happy with, so why not? plus - they were very rude to you not acknowledging your previous complaint. Just in future do a strand test or something beforehand, to kinda save your back a little...

Good luck anyways love! I feel your pain! :)
