Is the terrible "John Frieda Hair Dye Mousse" fit for purpose?

I bought a bottle of this product before Xmas in order to use it during the holidays. For those who are not familiar with it, it is supposed to be an "innovative" hair dye, in mousse instead of cream form. You can find more info here: www.johnfrieda.co.uk/homecolour/
The use of the mousse was easy. BUT: My hair was auburn. I tried 8G (golden blonde) and got dark brown-reddish hair :eek: I thought something was wrong, because when I mixed the dye, the colour was dark brown and not yellow as it normally is with lighter shades, but a) I am no expert and b) I thought that because it's a mousse, maybe it works in a different way. It was just before Xmas and I was so disappointed. The result literally ruined my holidays. Plus, I had to pay 70 pounds a couple of weeks ago to correct it
I complained to the company (KAO Brands Company) via email and they did not even reply. I only received through mail a voucher for 2 pounds off my next buy (yeah, as if). No apology, not a word :mad: What a nerve.
I had a look at a site named reviewcentre.com and found out (too little too late) that a LOT of women had the same problems with the lighter shades.
So, my question is: is this product supposed to be "fit for purpose" with results such as that? Should I contact Trading Standards? Compensation is not my aim; I would really like to see the rest of the consumers protected from this product and this company.

Sounds like it isn't, but your argument is with the retailer (unless you want to sue the manufacturer, which is also fine)
I would steer clear of emotional invective like your holiday being "literally ruined" - that only suggests hysteria or a particularly poor choice of location/partner/friends/whatever if it can be literally ruined (no redeeming features, unsalvageable) by a shade of hair colour. It won't get you more sympathy and you won't get compensation for it.0 -
Freda once used a hair dye, and she is blonde. Her hair turned a reddish tint. I think you will find this normal for some hair types. Also, just like other household liquids etc, it does say try on a patch first.
As for ruining your Christmas I am afraid, that is just conjecture0 -
I had a free sample of this dye before Xmas and I had a red shade like I normally do. It was the biggest load of rubbish I have had the misfortune to use :eek:Wife to a great husband and mum to 4 fantastic kids 9,8,4,3 they drive me mad but I would do anything and give everything for my family :grinheart

The crucial question OP needs to answer is "Did you do a strand test?" as the instructions recommend? If not, then I doubt you will get very far complaining.
Personally, I have used the black version of this with no problem.0 -
Red hair is the hardest to strip of colour and only bleach will enable your hair to be a lighter shade (i.e. golden blonde). Far too much experience, I think my hair has been every colour of the rainbow over the years. Never had a disaster though thankfully!
As Fluff says though, you really cant go from red to blonde without bleaching the hair first, so OP would probably have had similar results regardless of the brand she used. Either way, its a reminder as to why they recommend strand tests.
If we are plugging, Perfect Ten is by far the best brand I've found recently both for coverage and longevity.0 -
I've used 8G before, the dye was very dark, but it did work.
I have blonde hair though. Reading the John Frieda packet, is does say only to use if your hair is 2 shades lighter or 2 shades darker, so they will probably say you couldn't dye from red to blonde like that. I did like the dye, and how easy it was to apply, but it did seem to fade a lot faster then other dyes, and there are so many packets which don't include gloves!!0 -
I just had a quick look on the website and within seconds I found the 'tips before colouring' section and it clearly states:
Select a shade no more than 2 levels away from your current colour
You will know for the future though - it's not an easy job even for a highly skilled hairdresser to go from auburn to golden blonde. Most would recommend you do it over a few visits, gradually lightening as you go - to avoid too much damage to the hair. If I asked mine to try to do that with me I think she'd give me a straight no.0 -
Also blonde dye is often a much darker colour than it turns out. The colour of the dye has no bearing on the colour it is meant to turn your hair. (Odd I know!).
