Claiming Expenses for Hospital Outpatient Treatment

Hi - hubby on Income Support now and had to go for 'magic eye' last week.
We made two trips - to take him and then called back later to pick him up (couldn't wait as we didn't know how long and I have ME and couldn't have stood the hanging round).
Had to get son to drive as I'm not well and use a scooter - but I had to go to look after hubby (just as well as he was very sick coming out).
This resulted in two 40 mile journeys = 80 in total - too preoccupied on day to bother with sorting out money but ordered the HC5(W) over the phone a few days later.
Now filling them in and not sure what to put. I don't have receipts for petrol (but might have it on a bank statement) - and how much a mile do you put - or do they have a standard figure people use?
Thinking now we should have filled car up before and refiled after - but had other things on our minds and I'm not that well either so never gave it a thought.

hi i usually collect money on the day at the cash office in the hospital. they need proof of income support (a letter to prove that your on income support) proof of appointment (the letter with appointment on it) and if you have parking ticket take that also for a refund on parking.. they will calculate milage from your postcode (this is how they calculate how much money back you will get for petrol) you dont need proof of filling up the car. they will contribute to the journey to take him to the hospital and the journey home (if you have made journeys inbetween to go home etc you usually dont get this reumbirsed because your hubby isnt with you at that time). hope this helps0

Thanks - that what I thought - have got the detAils of appoint to put on form etc and there's a box to tick if on Income Support but under 'details of travel costs' says to send receipts or tickets and total of the costs:
GIVE DETAILS AND SEND US ANY TICKETS OR FUEL RECEIPTS
DATE = OK
AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR THAT VISIT ?
IF SOMEONE HAD TO TRAVEL WITH YOU AS ESCORT, AMOUNT THEY PAID ?
Unless I just put the mileage down, and parking ticket if I can find it plus an entry on bank statement for petrol?Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day. -- Sally Koch0 -
I think you need to call your hospital and ask what the mileage rate for private transport is so you can put that and the number of miles between your home and the hospital on to the form.
If you call the outpatients department they are likely to deal with this all the time so will be able to help.

Thanks MrsManda - great idea - will try them in the morning.
I know yrs back had to take son to distant hosp - claimed on the day there and they had a certain rate per mile.

im not to sure about the bit where you mention fuel receipts.. most occassions i claim at the hospital so i avoid filling out forms! and its only a few times ive had 2 send a form away to claim expeses (but it only asked for total mileage on the form) might be best that you phone up to query about the fuel receipts and to see if you put the mileage down instead? dont want to say one thing about this because i am unsure of it myself0 -
Thanks - hubby as another test on 15th and I might hold bac and claim for the two days when I get there 9and find the office!) - will save a lot of bother I think.

If you keep your appointment letters the transport office at the hospital will pay you for the appointments you have had and not already claimed for , as long as they are within 3 month period....they will not pay you in advance but will pay arrears........this sometimes happen to us because if you have a late appointment and the transport has closed you are unable to get the costs for that day.......and you must take your Income Support award letter as well............0

Unless there's a good enough reason, I believe they only pay for the cheapest transport and take into account things like promotions and concessions.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

But wouldnt that mean that all disabled people got 0 because of the free bus pass?
And because buses arnt accessable to us all we would be even more fluffed than we already are!0 -

I was thinking this too. I'm going to have to phone my hospital cash office about this. I have an appointment at 6.45pm in 3 weeks' time. I have no-one to go with me. Buses are virtually non-existent after 6pm and my appointment is predicted to last at least one hour. There is no way I can stand around in the freezing cold and dark waiting for a bus. It also takes (according to a journey planner site) at least one hour to get there and one hour to get home. This means having to leave just after 5.30pm, maybe leave the hospital at 7.45pm and won't get home until gone 9pm.Sealed pot challenge #232.
