I became a nanny just over 5 weeks ago, at the age of 37. DD2 was 17 and a half when he was born- a few months older than me when I had eldest who's now 21.
Unfortunately, baby's dad !!!!ed off before you could say "sleepless nights" so I've been doing a good 30% of the work. This is whilst looking after my own home/kids, decorating their new home and doing two open uni courses. *rant over*
On the upside, he is amazing. Watching him being born was incredibly moving- although pretty gruelling watching your own child in so much pain.
My top tips (ok, we're only 5 weeks in, but still!) be there, but not in the foreground. Do all you can in a supporting role (HOW much laundry?!?!) and be as encouraging as you can be. DD is doing brilliantly- she's a fantastic mother, but it does her the world of good to be told that, especially by me.
I've been far more involved than I planned on, thanks to her unexpectedly becoming a single mum- but I still intend to ensure I don't run my life around them. In fact, I've just booked to go off & play on a ship for a few days in March so I can recover. It's been madly busy, and will continue to be through Feb, so I'm off for some me time. I've done my fair share of the hard work, and whilst I'm happy to help out, I don't intend to do the lions share.
Enjoy your grandchild

Not 100% the same but my partner became a Great-Uncle when he was 20.Remember never judge someone that makes a mistake, because in six months time it may be you that makes the next mistake.0
