Me!! I'm 36 and will be a Nan (NO WAY am I EVER a Granny......) in about 3 months when my step-daughter becomes a Mum. (I am SD's Mum really she treats me as such and has done since she was 18mnths having no contact with her egg-donor....)

The BFs Mum is buying them an awful lot though and everytime I mention something I am told rather sheepishly MIL is getting it.

Me, I was 38 when DD had her little girl a year ago Friday. Was weird as I'd only given birth myself 7mths earlier. And I was there at the birth with her partner. Will come back to this thread when I get home. Standing by the running track watching my 10yr old and as I took my gloves off to type I'm ffffreezing!!
Too many children, too little time!!!
    :p
  • Hi
I became a Nanny last year when I was 41, I was there when my gorgeous grandson was born so I feel very privileged. I love him to bits and if a couple of days goes by when I havent seen him, I miss him! My daughter and her boyfriend were 18 when they had him, not ideal but despite the first couple of weeks being a struggle they are now doing brilliantly, I am very proud of them.
I also have a younger daughter who was 5 when she became an aunty, so they are very close, and if we all go out together, most people assume she is his big sister, she is very quick to correct them!
My Grandson is 7 months now, absolutely lovely, always got a smile for his nanny and we all adore him. As do his grandparents on his dad's side too, they are lovely people as well and we all got on well.
So enjoy every minute, it really is a very special relationship . Hope all goes well x
  • I am 40 and I am going to be a Nana in June. Had my DD at 22 and she is now 18. Bit shocked at first, but now I am loving it. I can not stop buying things, especially now that we know it is a little boy she is having.
My hubby is not as happy about it as I am, she is still his little girl etc, but he will come round.
It is nice being able to buy things that we could not afford when we were younger.
Congratulations, and enjoy your grandchild.....i know I will.
Make the most of your days, enjoy your life.

My mum was 38 when I made her a Nanny.
She was there throughout the pregnancy and when it came to my due date she moved in for 3 weeks and took care of everything, so I could concentrate on my daughter. She was even at the birth, and now she's always helping out with child-care, etc. If I have any problems I will ask her for advice and she's always the 1st person I call when little one has had a bump.
She was 17 when she had me and I was 21 when I gave birth - I think this helped us bond more than ever, because we were both so young.
It's things like that that I think will help out - just being there when they need you, etc.
    Congrats on becoming a Nanny!! :D x

I think the most important thing, whatever the age of the grandparent, is to be gentle and guiding rather than overbearing and bossy. I know it must be hard for parents who already know it all and think their children are doing it wrong when their children are doing their best but I am always hearing Mums (of all ages) complaining about their parents trying to interfere and tell them how to look after their baby.

    Fantastic advice

Wish someone would wisper that into my step mums ears. She has been a pain in the a!**

Huge congrats on becoming a gran soon. The fact that you are on here asking how best to deal with it shows you will be fab and a wonderful support
