I don't want to sound like a moaner but what feedback would you leave

I was looking for a item on ebay and i found one person selling what i was looking for but they was only selling the item as a job lot, so as i thought the postage was to high i sent the seller a message to see if they could do the postage cheaper, i then get a reply saying they cannot do the postage any cheaper due to the weight. So i placed my bid which was a low bid and i won the item, so i paid for the item on the 24th jan and on the 25th the seller had marked the item as dispatched so as i hadn't had my item by the 29th i checked the sellers feedback and someone had left him feedback for a item that they bought on the same day that i did. So on the 31st my item turned up so i checked when it was posted and it was posted on the 28th so i don't know why he marked it dispatched when it wasn't. Now i don't know what the price of the grey mailing bag costs so i will say a £1 for the bag and the postage cost him £3.58, so he charged me £5.75 so he made £1.17 out of me :D now i don't mind him making a bit of money but he could have posted the item out first class instead of second class.

I'd leave a positive as I assume you are happy with the item. I don't think the postage is as bad as some i've seen, so maybe just leave a 4 star, 3 if you are really miffed in the P and P box.

I would knock him down on the P&P rating, but if the item is OK, then I wouldn't leave a non-positive.

You did things right by contacting the seller, but if you feel even allowing for a mailing bag - and if they sell in bulk, a single mailing bag shouldn't cost a whole pound - that you've been overcharged, you have that option.

I wouldn't be too worried. I would leave positive feedback too, but mark down for the postage. I have refunded people where there was a significant postage difference, but thats just me.
  • I don’t think it would be fair to give a neutral or a neg personally; you agreed with the postage when bid and had further time to decide not to buy after asking or a discount. You could however mark down on stars for dispatch time on the other hand.

Don't forget that he may not have known the exact cost so it may not have been a deliberate overcharge, more a case of ensuring he didn't make a loss on the p&p - does he sell a lot of things that would weight exactly the same?

  • Wish you were my buyer, I have received 4 low stars for charging 80p when the actual postage was 41p, plus envelope etc.

It's the seller's job to know how much something is to cost. They are 100% in control of the price they charge, so it's up to them to know in advance what it costs to post something and charge accordingly.

If they make a mistake it is a good idea to refund some of the excess because it makes a better impression on the customer.

In a perfect world, yes, and the RM would never make any pricing mistakes, everything would be properly tracked, delivered and signed for and it would all happen in the correct timescale.

However it's an imperfect world and a lot of sellers charge a little extra to cover themselves - and to cover incidental expenses. I'm not sure how much of an excess would be needed to sensibly warrant giving them decreased stars for p&p.

I've had sellers do this for me and it does create a very good impression.

I would say that more than a pound would warrant a star or two knocked off. Not a low mark - but without a refund, I would mark someone down and it's obvious some other buyers think the same, so it's worth sellers making sure that their prices are as accurate as possible, because they have more control over them than their buyers do. It's OK to make a mistake, but better to acknowledge that mistake and adjust rather than arrogantly assuming that's the way to carry on.
