  • From the info on CIWF generally waitrose is the best for welfare standards, they still have the never knowingly undersold promise and do have flog offs when dates are near the end. Try to aim for uk based items as we have the highest welfare standards. I tend to have some veggie days so that i can afford the free range/organic meat when i have it. Sadly the rspca higher welfare schemes are not that different to normal standards. As already stated Quorn is very versatile and low fat.
  • Thanks greytdog,No waitrose or OCADO up here for me,wish there was...
anyhow decision made,we've orderd a new freezer being delivered in March so il probably wait until then before ordering the meat pack, but gonna try the Damn Delicious free range Aberdeen Angus one,£79.99,but i think that will probably last us a good 3 weeks,to a month,as we also have a couple of meat free days a week anyway(for health and cost reasons)
just waiting on my organic veg/fruit/eggs/milk, delivery now...hey at this rate im gonna be able to join the "No Supermarket for a month challenge"(now that would save me money.
    Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.
Week 10,total weightloss is now 13.5lbs Week 11 STSweek 14(I think)..-2, total loss now 1 stone exactly
    GOT TO TARGET..1/2lb under now weigh 10st 6.5(lost 1st 3.5lbs)

Please let me know what you think of the meat when you get it.
I buy our meat from our local butcher at the moment, but it isn't advertised as free-range, even though it's similarly priced. It is good quality meat though; evident due to the rich flavour and very little shrinkage, so I'm not unhappy with the price.
However, it would be nice to know exactly where and how our meat is raised, so I might give that company a try if you're happy with the meat when you get it:)
  • I will do Lily-lu,ive already tried there diced steak in a curry, that was lovely, and my family loved the brisket joint(i wasnt so keen),but it certainly had a lot of flavour,I bought these from their butcher shop in Lanark,i have mince in the freezer still to try.
Theres another company mentioned in this topic,https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3077646 called Great Bircham foods, from Sandringham estate, prices look very good for organic meat, only problem is i havent been able to find any info regarding delivery costs or how the meat is transported.

Don't get me started on Supermarket meat! It's always such a disappointment, with anything up to 50% volume lost to a nasty grey watery goo that comes out when you fry the mince, for instance. Yuk! I'd rather eat beans!

Round my way (down on the South Coast) all the English butchers have pretty much disappeared, barring one or two expensive upmarket versions that are too far away for regular use, but I've found a neat alternative. Not only good quality meat but also cheaper that most supermarkets - the Halal butchers, at the back of every Arab shop. Everything I've bought, lamb and beef-wise, has been honest tender tasty and well produced. Not only that, it's like a visit abroad going in there. Also brill for spices and dried goods, cheap and good. You should try Lebanese yoghurt - out of this world, if a tad expensive.

I get my free range chickens from Aldi. IMHO many supermarkets are not totally honest about the free range thing. Just look at how much meat is on the wings, to see what I mean.
    may your good days grow

I buy these organic beef and mince from asda and price is no different really. Stewing steak and Mince which is 2 for £5 just like normal mince. Sorry my links don't work just click fresh meat and then beef and organic :)

Also as someone said earlier about Morrisons being good meat, it is as my hubbie works in the meat industry on the grading side and morrisons will only buy the best cuts...unlike some

Why does beef that doesn't incur extra food costs or housing costs, cost more? Yes they take longer to get to weight, but there are no extra costs to get them to weight. Why isn't this offset?

I think it's more that factory-farmed inhumane meat is often sold at a LOSS. Customers are demanding cheaper and cheaper food, so 'nice' shops like tesco who have a stranglehold on the UK food business force their suppliers to sell to them at a loss.

It's also a scale thing, when it comes to transportation, butchering etc. It'll probably cost similar amounts to transport/butcher 5 cows on a family run ethical smallholding as it would cost a big business to slaughter 500.

Here's a good blog post to read re. meat costs: http://stonehead.wordpress.com/2011/03/02/calculating-the-cost-of-pork/

Overall though, it's that we have got used to buying meat for LESS than it costs to produce this, and keep demanding it cheaper and cheaper because we 'can't afford it' (we need ipods, after all) and yet still want meat twice a day instead of in small quantities like we used to. Because of this it's now raised in disgusting conditions and sold at prices that have destroyed the farming industry. I'm guessing in 5 years tesco will have put everybody but them out of business, and then they will be free to raise prices to astronomical levels with no fear of losing their customers to the non-existent competition.

Not sure why as I decided to give them a try after reading about them on another thread.
I had a delivery yesterday, not tried anything yet, but have a joint lined up for tomorrow.

There are several links on the main page which take you to the online store, or just click on the village shop at the top. There is a list on the left, beef, lamb & pork. Just click on those & you will be able to add to basket. There are other links at the bottom of the page too.
Delivery is £5 per order..I think it might be free if you spend a certain amount, but I'm not sure.
Next day despatch if you order before 1pm. I deliberatly left my order until Wednesday afternoon so I would receive it on Friday. (It arrived early morning.)
Meat arrives fresh, vacuum packed, in a polystyrene carton.
Hope this helps..if you have any more questions let me know. :)

our new freezer comes 19th March,so firstly im gonna try the damned delicious one(makes sense,as its less than 10miles from where i live),but the following month im gonna try the Great Bircham foods, because its organic and similar priced
    Found this after searching..
Shipping and handling is based on the total weight and dimensions of your order and is calculated upon checkout. All items are sent via Royal Mail. The shipping prices come directly from Royal Mail, and are generated dynamically based on your post code. (The handling fee we charge covers the shipping material - boxes and ice packs.) Hhmm if Royal mail are pricing the delivery it could work out quite expensive to Scotland...hopefully the delivery costs will be shown before the full transaction goes through?

why? It makes no difference where you are in the UK for RM prices.
only if they are using a courier like Parcelforce does it make a difference

edit: just checked, its £5 on an introductory box to Edinburgh
    so you can compare
