I work for one of the main networks.
Here's a simple tip (but so many don't seem to know it)
Remain assertive and know what you want but please be polite and even *gasp* friendly! You'll be amazed how much one is inclined to help a customer that's pleasant to help versus one that comes across with an aggressive attitude 8)This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I have succeeded in getting great deals on mine and my family's mobile phones every year for five years so it is definitely popular.
My trick is to call and ask for my PAC (Port Authorisation Code) which allows you to take your mobile number to another network. Usually when you do this the company ask why you want to leave and this is when you can start bargaining for a good deal by saying what great offers you can get with other networks!
This year I was originally quoted £180 to upgrade to the phone I wanted and £59/month for the line rental (which included 400 anytime any network minutes and 150 texts). In the end I got the phone for free and the line rental for £25/month. Total saving nearly £600.
I have heard though that Vodafone and Orange are the companies most likely to go to such lengths to retain customers.
I also have a second sim where I get 750 off peak minutes and 50 texts for FREE. You pay the £13.99 line rental but it is later reimbursed. See https://www.forwardcellular.com for similar offers. https://www.dialaphone.co.uk also sometimes have really good offers - it's worth checking often.
Good luck finding a good deal! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I hardly see that they're ripping you off. After all, you signed the contract... They're not obliged to change it as you wish.0 -

This is excellent advice indeed. It is amazing how much you can actually get if you build a raport with the customer service operator. They too are human and do suffer the occasional bad days. By being civil and making them feel good about thier jobs will make you the valued customer that you deservr to be. I tried this approach with Tmob a couple of weeks after they ushered me to cancel my contract. The young lady who I spoke to this time was very pleasant and after a little haggling she increased my 200min anynetwork off-peak to 500 mins anynetwork off-peak for £16.50 a month"I think I spent 72.75% of my life last year in the office. I need a new job!!"0 -

This really only works when you are a high mobile user. Despite my 8 years with Orange, now that I don't use my mobile as much they weren't really on for offering me a great deal. They would match the 3 500 cross network minutes deal but no flashy phone.
Having said that it prompted me to move to 3 with new phone and a great deal (free texts for 3 months), so my bills will be cheaper and I get much more for my money (3's call charges per minute are less than Vodaphone and Orange if you use all your talk minutes). Oh yes and I signed up for Talk Talk too on the home phone so all in all I should be saving a small fortune on our phone bills, land lines and mobiles.

Hi Everyone
Here's my story
I've been a customer with T-Mobile for nearly 8 years now and my monthly bill averages about £100 per month. Currently i pay £43/month line rental for 2 phones. For this my wife and i have 260 mins in total (no cross net and no Txt msgs).
I recently spotted a good deal with BT (6months 1/2 price line rental + shared minutes etc.) so called T-Mobile for my PAC numbers (I'm out of contract). They then passed me to disconnections who tried to convince me to stay. After 45 mins of talking the best they could offer me was 30 extra minutes and 50 Txt msgs. for £42. + i would have to pay £140 to upgrade my current phones. (Didn't even ask for anything fancy)
I asked the agent if he thought that was a fair reflection of my longstanding custom with T-Mobile to which he had no reply.
I now have both my PAC codes.
My only wish is that i'd spent the last 8 years with Orange or Voda. It seems they know how to look after their longstanding customers. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Hello
I recently rang Orange to upgrade my phone and at first they were pretty unhelpful - I am on the brilliant Everyday 50 tariff at £15 per month for 1500 minutes and as I was told by the call centre employee, when you get a good deal from Orange there is less incentive for them to try and keep you as a customer (surprisingly honest there). Anyway, an attempt to upgrade my phone to the Nokia 7210 would have cost me £100.
However, as soon as I mentioned that in the last month my spend was over £200 (almost all for work purposes), the conversation took a turn for the better. The employee immediately checked my 'spend matrix' and informed me that I was entitled to almost any phone for free. It's worth noting that this information did not seem to be readily available to the call centre and was contained on a different screen, which they had to bring up on request. Therefore on top of the tip recommended above it may well be worth asking the employee to check the 'spend matrix' too - and by the way, although one of the posts above contradicts this, in my case they took an average spend from the last three months, not one year. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
