Children without jobs

Both my children are due to leave full time education shortly. What happens then. Currently I can afford the rent on our current home as i get housing benefit tax credits and child benefit. I work and i earn 1100 per month but the rent is £750 per month, as a single working parent I never quite had enough "points" for social housing. But when my children leave education I will lose tax credits and child benefit immediately, not sure what happens to housing benefits. If they do not get jobs straight away and only get job seekers allowance or whatever it is now (never claimed it so dont know). What then, can i charge them rent and they claim housing benefit or am i just expected to keep them for nothing. As out of my salary £1100 minus £750 rent less £100 council tax, less £80 utilities, less 80 petrol(i have to get to work) less internet, phone, TV, food etc etc etc , oh my god I am so screwed.
Seriously I am renting the cheapest 3 bed house in my area. Downsizing would not help as a 2 bed is only £650, so still could not afford it on my salary alone.

If I chucked my kids out and took on lodgers on benfits they could claim housing benefit to pay the rent I would charge them so why can my kids not do the same.

How many hours a week do your work? What age are the "children"?

And if both children are unemployed you can get the equivalent to single person's allowance.

You can check how your childrens income/benefits affect your LHA on the Turn2us online benefit calculator.

Absolutely no-one who lives in the same property as their landlord who is a close relative may claim housing benefit from the local council - this is a national rule. The Shelter website is a good source of information on how LHA/HB works.

Therefore any agreement that you come to with them about their contribution towards household expenses is a private matter.

I work full time 40 hours per week, my children are 18 and 20 and both soon to leave education permanently, my son stayed 2 years longer in order that his sister could do her 2 year BTEC without me worrying about finances. But now they leave at the same time and jobs are scarce in our area, they have not even had any luck getting part time jobs, they are snapped up so quickly.

What is single persons allowance? Allowance on what?

Do you mean sons/daughters/son & daughter?

Because if they are old enough to have left education then they aren't children.

You will be three adults living in a house, child benefits don't go on forever;)

Here is a link here about Job Seekers Allowance for your children. They will receive £51.85 per week.

I wouldn't know about the housing benefit, but your 18 & 20 year old should get job seekers & they will have to contribute towards their keep from this.

So if the Landlord (the guy I currently rent the property from) re does the tenancy to rent to all 3 of us at £250 each then they could claim whatever Housing benefit they needed to cover that.

    No it is not.

it covers living expenses - food and utilities.

OP, you will need to put in a claim for Local Housing Allowance in your name with two dependent adults.
