If you want speed, try avast free, you can always put avg back on if you don't see an improvement.

    o2 dongle + AVG 10 = slow

That o2 software is a pig with XP.
I've had no end of bother with sofware I will describe politely as "absolutely pathetic" and "a disgrace" to a company that's raking in so much cash.
Sadly, if you're using an o2 dongle, you have no choice.

Great, I've picked the worst two to go together. I swopped to O2 as they were the cheapest BB offer at the time. Its a wireless box rather than a dongle though, does that make any difference?

Either Avast or Avira, but AVG is just too big for your wheelbarrow.

I'll get around to trying that, see my other post above.

Bluetooth ruuning in the background? Why?

Have I, no idea where that is. The computer certainly isn't bluetooth enabled. We do have a bluetooth dongle, but thats currently sitting ontop of the tower. OH uses it in connection with his phone.

    "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe".
    I would consider suspicious.

Can't help, no idea what this is.

A hp cd which installed a multitude of irrelevant software, which all wants to run in the background.

I've since heard much the same thing about HP, unfortunately thats our printer.

On the bright side, no obvious malware, just bloatware.

    Good :rotfl:

How did you get stuck with malwarebytes, click the link in the guide, click download latest version (on the right), the file mbam-setup will download, open/run it, then full scan

I tried it again, clicked on download latest version, and thats as far as the computer got. I went off and swept and mopped the kitchen floor, set the video to tape a programme and made some coffee, and it was still chugging away to itself on the same page.

So had to restart the computer and here I am back again, I'll try again.

Edited to add, its working now, see what I mean, this is typical.

Whoops, its doing it now, I know you said to follow the guide in order, but thought this was the next thing anyway.

Oh I remember, sorry, these AVG, when I've had to restore the computer to factory settings this has been a problem getting it back on again.

Do you really think I'm better without AVG though?

Hi, thats fair enough, and I certainly need lower memory usage.

I'll double check that I've got the licence number for AVG (Just in case) which I'm sure I have then I'll proceed.

Just to check, I uninstall AVG then follow the link in the guide above?

Okay, I've uninstalled AVG, although these still bits left, I'll come back to that.

I've installed Avast free version, but I'm more than abit worried that I use internet banking, and it recommended using the paid for version. For that reason, I'm also bothered about uninstalling Prevx and Rapport, what do you think?

With regards to the remaining parts of AVG, the reason I suspect these still bits of it left over, is when I start the computer, AVG prevents windows firewall from opening, it does eventually turn itself on. This has been almost normal for the last 6 months.
I've previously googled why this happens and found that a windows update didn't download properly, and now looking at the windows update log, none of the following updates have been sucessful  is this likely to cause a problem?

    Thanks for all this help.

I think you are worrying too much. Too much resident security software slows your pc down, all the time, not just when you are internet banking. The combination of Avast and malwarebytes (which you have to update and scan manually every so often), should keep you clean, but there are no 100% guarantees, however many scanners you use.

Re AVG, download and run the avg removal tool.

    http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools

    32 bit one.
