I am sorry, I ask for help then make silly mistakes. Yes its XP, I've altered the post above.
I think chkdsk ran okay, it all wizzed by a little fastAlthough I think I noticed a couple of fixes it made towards the end. I assume thats good.
Do you not have a "computer expert/friend" that could have a look for you? It would be worth a quick look. If there's an easily fixable problem I'd buy a new disk, image your current disk to the new one and use the new one. What's the first part of your postcode? (slim chance I know). If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -
its moderately high, anything less than 1GB is ok, but the lower the better.
post a hijackthis log, do a malwarebytes scan, and switch to avast!!

HTH, and thanks0 -
Good stuff. "the processor starts making chunking noise" This could be the processor fan (or case fan) or disk but the data appears ok (at the moment) so I'd bet on a fan.
Hope I've described that right, its as if when the computer starts running like its running through treacle its at its noisest.
Do you not have a "computer expert/friend" that could have a look for you? It would be worth a quick look. If there's an easily fixable problem I'd buy a new disk, image your current disk to the new one and use the new one. What's the first part of your postcode? (slim chance I know).
LE3, Do you think it could be just parts that need replacing?0 -
post a hijackthis log, do a malwarebytes scan, and switch to avast
I've posted the hijackthis log, but got stuck with malware, I followed the link in the guide mentioned above but got stuck.
"Switch to avast" - in small words pleasedoes this mean using avast as my browser?
I have a programme which lets me swap between browsers, I think this got downloaded last time I had to restore to factory settings.0 -

o2 dongle + AVG 10 = slow
That o2 software is a pig with XP.
I've had no end of bother with sofware I will describe politely as "absolutely pathetic" and "a disgrace" to a company that's raking in so much cash.
Sadly, if you're using an o2 dongle, you have no choice.
Either Avast or Avira, but AVG is just too big for your wheelbarrow.
Bluetooth ruuning in the background? Why?
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe".
I would consider suspicious.
A hp cd which installed a multitude of irrelevant software, which all wants to run in the background.
On the bright side, no obvious malware, just bloatware.0 -
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe".
I would consider suspicious.
Why? It's part of Windows, it's in the right place. Yes, worms can masquerade as system files, but there's no reason to suspect this file on this occasion.I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.0 -
avast is a virus scanner, uninstall avg and rapport, install avast, and follow the rest of the guide, you've got far too much software running at startup
How did you get stuck with malwarebytes, click the link in the guide, click download latest version (on the right), the file mbam-setup will download, open/run it, then full scan!!

I was thinking of Avant, doh!!! AVG isn't the free version, its paid for, am I wise to get rid of a paid for version, when I've had to buy this previously to clean up the machine after the free one let in a nasty.
Mind you, the paid for one let in a spoof email from facebook.

I didn't follow the download button, I copied a link on the page, I shall try again.
I do feel like I'm actually getting somewhere btw, thanks.0
