I don't think they have changed.
I don't think many VW garage workers would be on here rubbishing Mintex and Ferodo, and expect to be taken seriously tbh.
As for the cars, look at the pictures in the link.
At Partco we used to have a member of staff just for warranty issues with brakes and exhausts, and they were permenantly busy, so I would never recommend aftermarket brakes or exhausts for that very reason. It's a false economy.
When a part is likely to stay on your car for 5/6 years or 60k miles, i'd want the ones that would be as good from Day 1 to the time they are replaced. And just for the record, we replaced a cabbies set of pads this week, and he'd done 140k on the same set of pads from new. I bet you'd need at least 3 sets of aftermarket pads for that kind of mileage...and they'd squeal like a pig for most of their life!:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Please don't be offended if that opinion differs from yours, but feel free to click the 'Thanks' button if it's at all helpful!0 -
I expect to be taken seriously, as I'm giving advice based on my 17 years in the trade and 1st hand experience of Mintex/Ferodo/Lucas discs and pads, and the Dealer product.

Throw it open then.
Who's had a bad set of Mintex or Ferodo?
Who wouldn't use them as they are poor quality?
I'll be first,
I've used Mintex from choice for about 30 years - no probelms to date.0 -

Let the reviews commence...
ok,i'll go next.
ive fitted mintex to my focus, full set of shoes pads and discs, had no problems with them.
so next time i changed them i used mintex pads and discs again (had no real need to change discs just personal preferance) again had no real issues, they're still on the car just now.
however i'm going to be changing my shoes again shortly,i didn't buy mintex this time as i'm going to be selling the car shortly so ive opted for a cheaper set of shoes from my local factor for £13 (trade price) and i'll see how they go for a few months at least.
ive never had any problems with aftermarket brake parts after 11 years of fitting them to various vans and cars,i guess ive just been lucky then.
whats your take on EBC brakes rev?...work permit granted!0 -

It's an old Vauxhall Astra by the way, in reply to Optimus ( what a great user name !! )
Thanks once again.
Thanks
I would have thought you shouldn't have many problems getting parts ...... but i must agree with others, another vote for your local motor factors from me.˙ʇuıɹdllɐɯs ǝɥʇ pɐǝɹ sʎɐʍlɐ

Maybe by European manufacture they mean ALL the Fiat/Peugeot/Citroen/Lancia/Yugo etc, but none of the BMW/VW etc!
As you haven't looked, I'll post up the link to the Ferodo press release, and the web page for you
Based on sales data from global auto analyst JATO Dynamics, Europe’s best-selling 2009 passenger models featuring Ferodo Premier brake pads were:
Sales Rank Application
1 Volkswagen Golf
3 Peugeot 207
5 Fiat Punto
6 Renault Clio
7 Ford Focus
8 Fiat Panda
9 Volkswagen Polo
10 Opel/Vauxhall Astra
http://www.ferodo.co.uk/ferodo_web/news.aspx
second article
as for BMW,
Ferodo®, will exclusively supply the full field in the ultra-competitive Formula BMW racing series with the latest and best brake pad technology
http://www.ferodo.co.uk/ferodo_web/news.aspx
fourth article
So, I think that answers the question of whether or not Ferodo are as good as, or inferior to VW oe.
The only thing to check, as I said, is to make sure the dealer doesn't try to sell a service line grade, if you want to insist on oe quality.
If you look at Mintex OEM partners, among many others,
VW Group (Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, Seat, Skoda, VW)
BMW
http://www.tmdfriction.com/en/oem/references-pc
So I guess Mintex quality is as good as oem as well.
Just as a question, who did you think made pads for VW?
Or did you think they make their own?0 -

so what your saying is that every manufacturer doesn't own its own brake part factory. shock horror!
theres probably very little made by the actual car manufacturing plants themselves these days, most parts will be subcontracted to suppliers to manufacture for them.
the same parts roll of production lines into different boxes. one to vw box one to ferodo box etc...
we recently got a turbo for a vw engine, the original turbo was manufactured by borg warner,we ordered a turbo from BTN inside the BTN box there was a borg warner box with a borg warner turbo in it.
exact same part and number as the original vw unit but half the price from our local factor....work permit granted!0 -

I don't think you've read this bit of the thread?
This is the post I don't agree with.........................When it's something as inportant as brakes, I'd always go OE. And I've been the other side of the fence, having worked at a factors for 11yrs, and I saw faulty discs & pads coming back warped/squeeling/falling apart EVERY WEEK, but have not seen a single set of brakes come back faulty within the 2year manufacturers warranty period after 6 years at a Dealership.
There is not another manufacturer out there that can claim OE spec. They may use the same machines to make the parts, but the materials used are far inferior on the Mintex/Ferrodo/Girling etc and will not last as long or stop you as well.
A few extra quid, but may save you an accident, or God forbid a life................... and Mintex were by far the worst of the named brands...............
I wouldn't rubbish Mintex or Ferodo, while at the same time saying buy the same things in a VW box.0 -
I've never bought a set of replacement shoes or pads from the manufacturer's dealership, always aftermarket but always a quality brand.
I've had Mintex, Ferodo, Bendix, Lockheed Delphi, Jurid, Textar and many more i've forgotten without racking the feeble mind.
Never had a problem with any of these makes, quite the opposite and i would always fit Ferodo years ago when they were easier to find at my local Factor, often improving brake performance from standard...softer compound so didn't last as long but didn't rip the discs to shreds like the hard compound OE fitment on Mk1 and 2 Golfs would....similar overall costs over time but better brakes.
As for quality, stick your nose up to the wheels of any brand new Range Rover and you'll find the Ferodo brand proudly stamped on the highly visible pads.
Textar (now combined with Mintex) you will find are OE fitment on MB and BMW cars, makers not usually known for purchasing sub standard parts.0
