You need to update windows XP to SP2

Connect your "old laptop" to your router using an Ethernet cable to update to at least SP2 and then when using the Belkin USB dongle it should then connect using WPA and accept your router key/passphrase.

I am going to try taking back the belkin and getting a cheaper one in the hope it connects more easily.

It won't because it's not the USB dongle, it is your old laptops out of date OS.

I just downloaded SP2 and it still wouldn't do it - I think I need to try tomorrow when I am calmer

Have you re-booted the laptop after the SP2 install?

why on earth do manufacturers think their software works better than WZC, when in soo many cases it just doesn't ???

Often, the best way to avoid this happening with a new dongle is to plug in the dongle, and let the Found New Hardware wizard in stall the DRIVER ONLY for it...DO NOT run the CD first !!
