Completely and utterly pointless. No two people drive the same. Unless you drive exactly the same vehicle with exactly the same load on exactly the same roads, you'll have a different rate of wear. Someone who does mostly dual carriageway and motorway mileage or low speed around town mileage will have slower tyre wear than someone like me who spends most of their time on twisty country roads.

i think tyre wear depends on too many parameters set by the driver.

    amount of passengers.
    style of driving.
    whats kept in the boot.
    regular tyre maintenance.

just a few of the variables that could seriously affect the tyre wear on any car.

personally i would rather see tyre performace than longevity as i don't do many miles on my own tyres.

  • Nice Idea..... Too many variables for it to work though I feel....

Depends how you drive as well, if you drive smoothly, they'll last a lot longer, drive like a idiot, and wont last that long.

agreed way too many variables involved in tyre tread wear concerning driver, the car and roads used.

completely pointless thread for a pointless idea.

How many runs up the drag strip or donuts in McD's does it take to wear 1mm off a tyre?

or even the traffic light grand prix on the commute to work, Still unsure why a dual carriageway needs
to open to 3 lanes for 50 yards at every set of lights, Then back down to 2.

How about a tyres mpg thread, or one where we post how good we feel the stopping distance is? Or the ride and handling / road noise with new tyres. My b-i-l's Volvo went through tyres like you wouldn't believe, no matter what he put on it.

Tyre wear is only one part of why people would by one tyre over another, so you'd need to have quite a few separate threads...

Good tyre wear being related to money saving does come into it, but if you have hard wearing tyres that don't grip and you end up in a crash, then it might cost a lot more than a grippier tyre would.;)

That's my reason for thinking the thread wouldn't really take off.... but it's a good question, wig.

My biggest worry is that the majority of drivers only change tyres because a garage/MOT tells them to, let alone measure accurately what the tread depth is
