Do you think we could do this? New thread idea

Start a tyre tread wear thread? I envisage a thread which is moderated only to allow tyre tread wear statistic posts, any off topic posts to be deleted. I don't mean this thread, this thread is to discuss the idea.

So for example having bought new tyres today I would put this into the thread

Avon ZT5 175 65 14 ordered and fitted - MADE IN CHINA ! - E4 -
£33 ea ordered direct from local independent fitter
Mileage today is 63670
On the rear, FWD, at 33psi
New tread depth 9mm

That would be followed up by an update after 10,000 miles with an accurate tread depth reading or a mileage reading when the twi were reached. FWD = front wheel drive, RWD = rear wheel drive.

There would have to be a discussion thread of the same title linked to the thread because inevitably people will want to discuss the new posts and any issues connected to the treadwear thread for example their opinions on grip/noise provided by the tyres they just bought.

Obviously this would be a long term thread, but I have been here 5 or 6 years and if we had started one then, we would have a good quality thread by now.

I currently do 10000 in 10 months which I think is very realistic to gather meaningful statistics on tyre designs which generally don't change for years on years. Other people may do 10000 in 6 months or less.

This is do-able on MSE as they do the same thing on other boards here.

But there are no mods so how will that work?

Crabman is our boardguide, and he could flag the posts for deletion like they do on the other MSE threads of the same style, or maybe it is acceptable for any forum user to press the abuse button on 'off topic' posts in such threads and then admin will delete the offtopic posts.

By the time you have any meaningful stats, the original tyres will no longer be available in the retailers (maybe the manufacturer will have disappeared/the tyre been replaced by "this year's model/etc).

Anyone voting in this poll should be aware their votes are not anonymous.

eg The only one who has voted in favour so far is the OP!

There's a lot of negative people here not willing to try something new, sharing our collective experience.

Come up with something a bit decent then, rather than a thread about blo0dy tyre threads, then maybe you will get a better reaction..

Come on, we dont agree so we're negative?

I cant see the value in it.

How many people would forget and never reply? How many pages of useless information would it be awaiting reports back? ,

If they do it on other boards, why not join there and post? Provide a link in your OP for those that think it's a good idea?

Now if it was a choice (you had to pick one or die sort of thing)between a tyre wear and a paint drying thread..........:p

You could make a thread rule that you post your results by editing your previous post and put results in bold, simple easy way to see which posts have results posted.

I meant they do a similar sort of thing on other MSE boards on different subjects, like
"cinema vouchers" thread/"cinema vouchers discussion" thread

Over time I think it would be a useful thread to show how long various tyres last. But I think not enough people would participate to make it work, as can be evidenced by the poll results.

To be fair, I've read better threads.

The length of time tyres last is going to be dependant on the type of driving you do, its also not really the most important factor. If you save £20 but end up skidding you car into a ditch and losing your NCB then its not really worth it.
