I believe you should ALWAYS lend a friend £10 if they request it....the trick is to NEVER lend them any more [or anything else] until they've repaid the first £10.

The trick to refusing is to always ensure that when asked you don't have any spare cash on you at that moment [even if you have £500 cash on you].

I find that people stop asking when you've said three times running......"Sorry mate, only got enough for my tube fare on me. I might be going to the cashpoint at lunchtime if that's any good". Of course I always then 'Didn't get a chance to get there".

Also need to get off my own backside and work out how much she owes me (I do all the grocery shopping on the understanding she will pay me back half...just haven't gotten round to totting it all up yet, so can't blame that on her).

Tot up the groceries + the fiver. Then you only have to ask for one amount.

(you could always add £5 every time, call it an admin fee :rotfl:)

she paid the £5 back today, so no worries there...if I ask, I know she will pay me, it's just the asking I don't like (must be a British thing. lol). I do need to tot up gorcery amounts as it is already a fairly considerable amount, and, as mentioned, it's not fair on her if I continue to let it build up, so that will be sorted once and for all next week. We've already agreed she can repay me bit by bit, so will need to finalise a payment plan as well :).

hold her upside down and shake rapidly, she might get the message and you might get your fiver back, out of her pockets.

I am soft too, been too soft in the past, hardening up now being 45 you know!

I am still owed £200 from when I was 16 in college off my best mate at the time. Havent seen him in 25 years, no chance of getting it back now

Why don't you alternate who pays for the shopping. My uni house we all had a separate bill. So we added up how much we owed each other and put it on the fridge. Then I worked out who owes who for what groceries and put that on fridge too.

Never loan money to friends, definitely.

I paid on my debit card for goods when a friend (who I'm currently deciding not to speak to) said she'd "forgotten" her pin number. She promised to pay me back once her pin reminder came through, alas I've not had it back. She knew I didn't really have much cash at the time as it was the run up to Christmas. When thinking about it though, I'm probably better off without her and we really have nothing in common. I guess it was the price for a lesson learned.

I do all the cooking and shopping...I left her alone for 2 weeks, came back and there was literally *nothing* in the house, food wise. For some reason known only to herself, she hadn't gone grocery shopping?! She also can't cook, whereas I enjoy it. To balance things out a little, she does most of the washing up.

The putting what's owed on the fridge is a good idea, though...I may do that with grocery receipts from now on :). Thanks!

Why don't you both sit down and do the grocery order online? That way she gets input into the final amount and she is there when it's totalled so she knows what she is paying. Shopping and cooking isn't for everyone but a compromise is in order I think, unless she is really your long lost daughter.

Oh No... Dont want to go there or facebook.

I have got dragged in to being on here ,without, totally ruining my life with speaking to people I had reasons to stop speaking to in the first place ! lol

My sister over in Australia is permantly on face book and I can see it now, getting mithered from 1000's of miles away everyday ! If she knew I had skype she wouldnt let me live it down.

Don't want my sordid past life coming back to haunt me, lol.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I would be better being £200 down than getting in touch with some of my previous friends.;)
