I would be very scared using windows 98! Try out ubuntu. www.ubuntu.com.

Alternatively the best firewall is a hardware firewall. You should be able to pick up an ADSL router with a firewall for ~£12.

I totally adgree with ollushaw. You say zonealarm is no longer supported, I'd be more concerned that Win98 isn't nor was it been for a while. With all the holes in it now due to no hotfixes being available I'm guessing no firewall will give you total protection.

    I'd certainly not use win98.

I was in your situation and as much as I liked win98 I decided I could no longer risk the lack of up to date firewall and OS so went ahead with the XP upgrade. You can get XP pro new and boxed for a special student price of £71 on ebay - I haven't looked back!!! BTW if you don't like XP's crap feel & looks you can make it look and behave just like your old 98 desktop and start menu which is much better IMO!

Surprised at ollyshaw's comments about MS no longer supporting Win98, as I regularly get MS updates.

As detailed in the posts below, it is no longer supported. As a result I would not use it at all. Especially as there is a COMPLETELY FREE, secure, alternative, Ubuntu.

Not so useful as an alternative if you can't get your broadband to work on Ubuntu.

I tried Ubuntu on two separate PC's with wireless and wired connections but failed to get on line with both :undecided , I gave up after around 3 hours and decided to stick to with XP.

none of these are compatible with Win98SE. Tried both comodo and kerio downloads and neither will install.

Anyone know of a firewall that still supports Win98 please?

    Thanks, L

If you find you are having problems with Zone Alarm this is an excellent site for getting older versions of software www.oldversion.com/, they have zone alarm, sysgate, tiny and outpost firewalls

Sticking with XP I can take, its an operating that recieves security updates (unlike win98). As for getting online, if you had a hardware router, you just need to plug in a Ethernet cable and off you go!

I always try to push ubuntu as an alternative, it must be the moneysaving operating system!

PS I dont have a beard!

XP has had far more serious holes in it than 98 ever did, cos there are more lines of code to have a go at. The hackers will be concentrating on XP and vista, because the user base is bigger. A hardware firewall, a good virus scanner, software firewall, and spyware scanner is good protection to have, if someone does find another 98 exploit, it is highly likely that AV scanners will pick it up if you happen to stumble on a rogue site.

The routers nat and firewall is a lot more protection than most people have had in the past.

    You're having a laugh :rotfl:
