Anyone recommend a good free/cheap Firewall?

Just signed up for broadband, which I have been told is more prone to hacking as its an "always on" connection.
I have used Zone Alarm in the past, but they have now stopped support for Win98SE. Anyone know of another free/cheap version I could use?
Thanks, Lesley

Just google for them .

none of these are compatible with Win98SE. Tried both comodo and kerio downloads and neither will install.
Anyone know of a firewall that still supports Win98 please?
Thanks, L0 -
eek, win98?? I'm not sure about that, but try ZoneAlarm. It's free, and I used to use it on Win98, though whether it still works on it, who knows?!

I would be very scared using windows 98! Try out ubuntu. https://www.ubuntu.com.
Alternatively the best firewall is a hardware firewall. You should be able to pick up an ADSL router with a firewall for ~£12.

Thanks. Just bought a new router with my broadband package, so not wanting to change that just now.
Am I so out of touch using Win98SE? I've never had problems with it and therefore feel "if its not broke don't fix it!" Beginning to feel a bit of a dinosaur with some of the comments here!!!!0 -
Imagine you are a hacker, which operating system are you going to try to hack? Windows 98 is no longer supported by MS, and any security flaws are very well known. It would be the first machine I would try!

How are you connecting to your ISP? If you are using a router, you will have inbound protection but a software firewall is still required. As you are using an old unsupported operating system, why do you think that you need the very latest firewall to go with it. Versions of ZA before the current 6.5 branch are still compatible with Windows 98SE, so simply download a previous version from here. Don't be put off by the comments about using an old OS, millions of users around the world are still using it! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Thanks for the words of support espresso!!!
I have been searching and managed to find a link to an older version of ZA, which I think is the same as the link you have offered above. Its downloaded ok and seems to be working.
I have a router, but this broadband stuff is all a bit new to me, so want to try to be as secure as poss.
Surprised at ollyshaw's comments about MS no longer supporting Win98, as I regularly get MS updates.
Thanks to all replies, L0 -

Effective July 11, 2006, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me (and their related components) will transition to a non-supported status. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide any incident support options or security updates. Microsoft is not offering a custom support agreement for these products.
think they did one last security update after that....but no more
