Fair point, but it is the way we are headed. Your thread on unembossed cards was spot on if it does not say electron on it it is not electron. It is all to do with this 3 digit code placed in the chip and mag stripe to say if the card must go on-line for authorisation, needs a PIN and lastly if it can be used outside of the issuing country.
But the rest of the point are mainly nonsense. It may indeed be the case Santander are getting rid of embossed cards, why do we need them now?0 -
Hi
I recieved a new pin last week which I enquired about as I'd not requested one...I was told that this was sent in error and the yesterday recieved the card you mention ie:black lettering with electronic use only on the back....I rang the bank again today and they said it was a multifunction card!
I asked why they had sent me this as I'd not requested a new card... after trying to phathom what the lady with lets say less than perfect English was going on about! it's to be used as a spare if I lose my original card.....so why on earth send me a back up card, for the just in case senario...just means I have 2 visa debit cards in my purse to be stolen...0 -

Just to clarify, I had a new debit card from satander this week. It's embossed and says Visa debit on the front.

Yep, they are Visa Debit, it is only the Co-op who have the real problem at the moment and hopefully they will fix it (changing the AID on the chip to match the card type on the outside).
We dont need embossed cards anyway, if you google "visa unembossed" you will see that Visa are moving towards them (Mastercard too). The USA and Canada only got them in the last few years, they never had Visa Electron. If they are only introducing them to the American market now, I imagine they are here to stay.0 -

During my holiday in the US I had an embossed full-auth (ie the basic account one) visa debit card with lloyds. This never got declined. However in the UK, the usual stuff: trains, etc would get declined if the GPRS signal didn't work. Slightly different... wonder what they do in the US with the new unembossed cards if they don't have the proper electronic auth machines, and only the "slidey" thing?0 -
Good point, it really should be the same all over. Technically if it is a card with what is called an X2X code, that means full authorisation then if it cant be authorised it should be declined. I think the issue is to do with what equipment the retailer has for accepting the card and if it is new enough to look for these codes.
In my opinion they should not have rolled out full auth cards until they had upgraded all terminals to be able to look for authorisation, as people are not being told by their banks they could be declined on a train, plane etc. and I have not been in the situation but what do you do. You have what you think is a valid payment method, the conductor or machine wont take it, do they call the Police and call you a fare dodger?0 -
My ex A&L visa debit card has been replaced my a Santander embossed visa debit card with 02/11 start date.0

The whole point of issuing unembossed cards is that the bank don't rate the account holder highly enough (rightly or wrongly) to trust them with a card that can be used via a "slidey thing".Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48
