  • Well..Ive bitten the bullet and ordered a pair...Will just wait and see....At £13 thru paypal you can't lose, although I do agree that there is probably some poor person getting paid peanuts for putting them together somewhere, a bit of a grim thought ....Makes me shudder when I go in Primark too tho but never stops me buying....sad world aint it.

  • Thanks for the advice JasonLVC
I've ordererd a pair & am faxing them my prescription to be on the safe side. Also thanks for the advice on sunglasses. I've never had prescription sunglasses before, so will take your advice (though i am seeing what the 1st pair are like before ordering a sunglasses pair)

  • I just tried ordering with them and couldn't even get the site to progress my order. Also, I think I'll have a 'warmer' feeling if I buy through a UK-based site.

    PD stands for Pupilary Distance.

At an opticians, it is when the girl puts a ruler across your forehead to measure the distance between your eyes. It is absolutely essential this is correct or else you'll get big headaches, quickly.

Your optician may have put it on your current prescription, if not, go back and ask them for it. You cannot order glasses without this figure. It will be a two digit number like 66 or 82, etc.

Full tint (sunglasses) are better than the reactolite ones. For starters, the reactolites don't work when you're driving as your windscreen usually filters out the exact same light needed to activate your lenses!. Also, they have a tint range from 0% (clear) to around 30%-50% so you are not going to get total 'darkness' so to speak.

Sunglasses have a permant tint, the % of which you can specify (ie, go for 100%) and also the color of the tint. This will enable you to get the darkest possible tint - I guess it comes down to how much sun you want to block out and how the tint matches the frame (ie, if you have a white frame and a dark tint it will look silly, if you have a brown frame and a brown tint of about 85% intesity it'll look better - but it's all personal choice to be honest).

Best thing for you is that for the price you can afford to get it wrong.

Great advice but beware that reactolite dont go completely clear and if you are dead-person pale like me then it can give you the appearance of bags around your eyes!!

Also there is a legal limit to the depth of colour you can use for night time and dusk driving so make sure that any tinted lenses you buy take that into account. Ive also never heard of 100% sunglass tint as this will either mean it blocks 100% of light or 0% of light (making them either impossible to look through or clear)

plutoniumpilot put your prescription on here and we can give you an idea of the thickness, some people have a very little prescription and consider themselves near blind while others never wear specs they really do need !

I suggest you use https://www.opticals4less.com to be honest. They are more expensive but provide higher quality frames and lenses. My Dad uses varifocals and usually pays upwards of £350 for them from his local optician.

This website did them for £100 - so expensive compared to goggles4u but a much better bet as you can select from about 6 different types of lenses (from bottle top to wafer thin), depending upon how much you want to pay.

I've used them before too with no problems, but there cheapest glasses are £25 against goggles4u's £12 - I'm short sighted by the way (too much time on these damn forums).
I have to agree - took two pairs away from home for fours months and both broke. the screws on the rimless ones undo very regulary.

I've been using them for nearly 2 years now and have never had a problem.
We did our own PD with a felt tip pen, to mark the pupil from each eye on a pair of specs and a tape measure lol

today I've had my 18 month old specsavers frames pop a lens out after the screw came lose. it landed in a muddy puddle, but luckily didn't get scratched or stood on in a very busy city centre. I've also bought from goggles4u and the quality isn't a good as many expensive frames I've had, but it's still better than some. I use them for 2nd pairs and sunglasses.

Its peanuts to us but it is their job for them so you shdnt feel too bad at all. They actually make frames over in Pakistan and export them here for sale in vision express, boots, specsavers etc including designer frames. Thats why there are tonnes of specs over there which are exactly the same as some designer specs here.

They also make lots of ralph lauren clothes and towels and levis jeans which are also dirt cheap there especially if you choose the 100% identical "lives" branded jeans instead of levis (you can get levis too but cost bit more and they are not fakes - they are made in factories out there)!

  • My partner has ordered a couple of pairs from them and they have been spot-on. Incidentally, we ordered via Quidco for the 10% cashback and paid in US$ with Nationwide Credit Card. The Quidco amount tracks the US$ amount as though it is Sterling so we got 10% of $33.99 paid to us as £3.40 when it really should have been about £1.79.

You'll have to take my advice as a spectacle wearer not as a professional optician as you appear to be.

The 100% tint I refer to is layman's speak for a range of tint from barely tint through to light brown, mid brown upto very dark brown. I've got some genuine raybans that are very dark when wearing them and you can't see my eyes if you were talking to me. That's what I'd call full (100%) tint. The goggles4u website does allow you to select a tint % range from 10% to 100% (which isn't actually impemetrable, merely the darkest they can make them without making you blind).
