Do we HAVE to take our baby to be weighed at the HV?

Such anger and frustration in the post above! Wow!!
No anger or frustration! Just my opinion. Which I'm told is wrong. Just because I don't believe in a "profession" called a Health Visitor. I would rather real doctors and nurses got paid more and they got rid of the HV.
After all, they are the only ones of any use.
Oh sorry, I seemed to have forgotten again, silly me. They can't tell us that our child is overweight / underweight / doesn't poo or wee enough / isn't as far advanced as normal children their age.........you get the jist, could be here all day! Thanks to all posters :A0 -
You might have worked with many children in different circumstances, but that's nothing compared to living with a child and raising him/her, so I disagree with you when you say you have done as much as a parent would have apart from actually being pregnant and giving birth.
Well said! Not there for them 24/7. Not there whilst they are ill, and telling them that they'll be ok. Not wishing you could take it all away from them. Whilst they are teething / have colic / have their jabs / are potty training / their first day at school / their first boyfriend or girlfriend / their first heatbreak...... etc etc. Not there like a parent. So how you can say that you have done as much as a parent I don't know. You need to be with them through all the points above, and much much more. Thanks to all posters :A0 -

When you refer to "REAL NURSES" do you mean the ones that have at least 2 years post qualifying experience and have studied (at degree level) for an additional year to become,'erm what are they called again ? oh, thats it Health visitors !!!0 -

Actually I have worked with children where I have been there 24/7. I've stayed in hospital with frightened children about to undergo an operation and nursed them through illnesses. I have had to tell a child their Dad has died. I have been there for Christmas's, birthdays, weddings and funerals. I have had first day nerves at school and as for relationship issues well, every teenager I have ever worked with has needed my support and advice in this area! This is just scraping the surface of things I have done so yes I do think I have experience of a great deal of things any parent would.
Add on to this some things that most parents wouldn't experience too. The verbally and physically violent threats and actions - ending up being hit, bitten and covered in bruises from said child for example. Coping with children who put themselves at risk day after day unless you are there 24/7 for example. I wouldn't wish some of the things I have had to do on any parent.0 -

in many ways people like you have more experience of children thna your average parent
we only have experiences of our own children, as i have 2 that is rather limited
all kids are different and there are many variables to parenting so someone like you will have seen and experienced way more of these variables than me
as parents we don't like to be told that someone knows about our childrem more than us.. but isn't that why we let doctors and dentists treat them, teachers teach them, even let the woman at clarkes tell us how big their feet are!!
it doesn't take away from us as parents its just some people are more qualified in certain situations£608.98

Absolutely agree with you thatgirlsam - but despite my varied expereince I would still be absolutely willing to learn with a parent such as yourself. I in no way ever profess to know everything with any family I work with. I know I will always face scrutiny from some parents who believe you have had to have a child to be able to support a parent with their own child until I have my own. I just try therefore to use the experiences I have had as a frame of reference in my practice.0

You certainly sound like you've more experience than I do squirrel chops, with my 3 children 24/7!
I'm afraid I just think it is irrational and ridiculous to believe that because one health visitor was poor, that all health visitors are a waste of time, or that you need to have children to have expertise and skills to pass on to others about children, or that advice must be good because it has been given by someone with a large number of children but no formal childcare education. Some HVs are poor, yes, as are some GPs and some nurses, but that isn't to say that the whole professions should be abolished. Some parents give great advice and some give terrible advice, and the number of children they have doesn't affect that. Some professionals give cracking advice even though they have no children of their own. I have a child with autism. None of the speech therapists, occupational therapists, doctors or teachers who work with her have to the best of my knowledge any relative with autism, but the advice, support and knowledge they have imparted to me has been second to none, and certainly has not been affected detrimentally by this. By contrast some of the worst advice I have got about this child has come from other parents of children with autism, who are prepared to put their children through some quite extreme and IMO abusive " treatments" in the search for an elusive cure, and to advocate these to others.0
