    I know its a saving,but a chunk?

TBH the saving wasn't what bothered me

It was the spec of the PC you get for the price.

I was going to use it for a PC running pfsense as my home hardware firewall, but I think it would be a good setup for those on a budget too.

I'd go for the phenom x4.
Video editing, then I'd go for the x6 - pro video software takes advantage of the extra cores, so a £150 6 core will perform better than a £150 intel

Much as I love AMD cards, I think for video editing you are better off with an nvidia - purely for the CUDA support. Sadly AMD has missed a trick and doesn't have the same support nvidia has. You won't need a 460, something like a 430 GT for £50 will more than suffice. Spend the cash on something like a decent sized hard drive and/or SSD. And get ram, lots of ram, at least 6gb, pref 8

I think the saving was based on the price of the three items combined for just over £200 whereas Gonzo127's build was just over £300 (if I'm comparing like for like).

I'm still looking and nothing's really finalized as yet.

i personally wouldnt bother with the phenom x4 ok the x6 might be worth a look however if you check the review i posted of the sandy bridge chips in a lot of instances the sandy bridge chips where faster than the x6 and only the tiniest bit slower on video encoding for example

GIMP image encoding (points higher is better)
    i5 2400 at stock 3.1ghz - 1487
    x6 overclocked to 4.2ghz - 1368
    x6 at stock 3.3ghz - 1181

Handbrake video encoding (points higher is better)
    x6 overclocked to 4.2ghz - 2573
    i5 2400 at stock 3.1ghz -2569
    x6 at stock 3.3ghz -2106

as for the gpu def nvidia for encoding because of cuda, and to be honest people are probably right the gtx460 is probably overkill although i am not sure i would drop all the way to the 430gt and probably suggest the inbetween 450gts at ~£90 (or 250gts at ~£80) just so if the op does want to play a game they wont be dissappointed

as to hard drives i would still stick with the samsung f3 - http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/storage/2009/10/06/samsung-spinpoint-f3-1tb-review/1 give a good run down, ok it is not as fast as a SSD but then again you wouldnt expect it to be but when you consider most of the time a SSD is only giving you ms or at the most a few seconds quicker access time the price premium still seems a little excessive although boot time is massivly increased, 64gb for £75 or 1tb for £40

RAM wise - well if op goes for the foxconn motherboard another poster has spotted (i would probably recommend that over the gigabyte one i found) then the op would have four slots, pop 4gb in now and see how it is and then they still have the other 2 slots for another 4gb if it is needed/wanted
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

The Foxconn motherboard looks good as a motherboard and is cheaper to boot. :)
I've just been on to ChillBlast for a price for them to supply the parts and I'm waiting for them to come back to me.

Looks like this is a lot more involved than I thought.
I'll have to shop around, see what's compatible with what and then start looking at prices.

Thanks for all the input folks.

    Its not that bad.
for me I work out the processor im getting
this then dictates the socket type for the motherboard
so i then look at features/budget on the motherboard
then get ram thats compatible with that motherboard
same goes for the graphics card and hard drives (though nowadays it would be PCI and Sata respectively most times)
obviously if you are using old parts oyu have already then you need to work around that
