I also thought about something like this, I was going to buy one of these myself for when I build my new hardware firewall PC. It's a pretty good bloomin spec for the price, and saves you another chunk of money

everyone should have a go building a system, good fun and sense of achievement.
a great place for software is software4students.co.uk, they have win 7 and office for £40 each. dont be put off, from what i've read you can get it by just having a child or relative in any kind of education.
useful tip for static... plug the power cable into the psu and the wall socket, but turn off the wall socket and the psu switches! helps keep the whole thing grounded (and you by touching the case). Never caused me any problemsSwagbucks since July 2012 - £300 Paypal, £330 Amazon
Neobux since 22nd June 2013 - $3600, 1398 referrals0 -

See I heard that rubbing your feet on a shagpile carpet then playing with electronics wards off the boogyship.0 -
Thanks for all the input folks. Looks like I'm going on a shopping trip this weekend to see what I can get.
I think I'll be able to buy all the kit in various places to save some cash and get discounts if I buy several items in ione place (free postage, etc). The discounts got to be worth a try .... hasn't it?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Well the spec I listed I can get to
2 Hitachi HDD 16MB cache 7200 RPM at £27.98 each
Intel i5 SandyBridge 2.8GHz 6MB cacheRetail £139.80
FoxCon SandyBridge Motherboard £69.98
Corsair 4GB 13333MHz £33.58
Samsung 22x DVD+-RW £11.99
OCZ Modular 500w PSU £49.99
ATI MSI 5850 1GB Vram £134.99
And you can get cases anywhere from £15 to £1500 to I'll let ya pick, but this is the cheapest I could find my spec (almost) £496.29 (No Case) And I know you can get VERY cheap PSU's and will bring the cost down by £30 but you will find they won't last long and will be problamic in the future (especially if they are el cheapo's from china using substandard or rejected parts from the main brands) and you'll be lucking if only the PSU blows and not the entire board.0 -
Well, I've just emailed my wish list to both Scan and eBuyer based on Gonzo127's original spec and asked them to come back to me with a price (including OS) minus any available/reasonable discounts.
I'll let you know how I get on.......:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

eBuyer have just come back and said that's the lowest they can go regardless.
Looks like I'm waiting for Scan to come back or have a trip to Maplins at the weekend.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

I know its a saving,but a chunk?0 -
to add to the thread. Ive been debating various specs myself for a new build.
bar general office type stuff. my PC's main task is media streaming and a bit of encoding.
no real gaming bar a little bit of RTS,so no big gaming power needed
Im swaying to the AMD athlon/phenom X4 on a bang for buck rational.
the cost of the intel chip and motherboard pushes it a bit more than im looking to pay.
though im still holding off in the hope of a price drop/deal0
