My winning combination when my little fella had chicken pox age 3 was:

-piriton as soon as we noticed the spots and taken all the way through until all the spots had dried up.
-bicarbonate of soda in the bath (I just poured a bit in each time, quite generously though)
-no soap in the bath at all, but washed him all over with the calomine aqueous cream

He had no itching at all.

With regards to being off, I think it's just when they've all dried up as others have said. My friend's little girl (along with 10 others in my little boy's class ) have just had it. She came out in the spots last Thursday night and has been back in school today, with all her spots dried up. School were fine with it so the others are slowly going back in too now.

Good luck with your little one! :)

  • Well she has got more again today as the day has gone on and has slowley started to get anoyed with them too bless her.

Keeping her dosed up on the piriton, have also given her calpole as she is running a bit of a temp and gave her a bicarb bath and have covered every single spot with cream about 4 or 5 times, the first few times she thought it was fun as i let her put some cream on the spots on her belly, but as the day has gone on and she has got more spots and tiredness has kicked in its not so much fun for her anymore.

However her little sister had great fun finding more spots for me to put cream on before bed time much to the discust of my 5yr old in all fairness though she had been standing there for about 20 mins and her sister kept finding them.

She has only had one itchy moment so far and an hoping if i keep up with the above as some other posters have mentioned she will not get itchy.

    Many thanks all :0)
  • My DS who's 4 had them not so long ago, thankfully he didn't get too many and wasn't really poorly with it.

2 things that I found that worked were if he had a bit of an itch I smoothed some aloe vera on the area (that I kept in the fridge), and also a bath with cheap porridge oats in - not directly in the bath, but put a load in the foot of a pair of tights and tie to the bath taps - let the bath water run through the tights and it just makes the water a bit creamy. I then washed him with the tights, this really seemed to help.
  • Thanks kathie1101

She had a really bad night last night not with itching but with high temp and feeling sick, she has go lots more throughout the night mainly on her face and in on her scalp. was up creaming/piriton/caulpole at 6,10,2,5,9 she is feeling a bit better and still smiling so thats a good thing bless her
  • Both my boys were 'better' (no signs of illness other than head to toe spots) once the spots came out, bless her she must be really miserable by now !
