  • Salaries in LOPndon are higher - because cost of living in London is higher.

    Simple maths.

A 19 yr old looking at the average wage is taking a distorted view.

They'd be better looking at average wages for 19 yr olds.

The £25k figure includes those paid mega salaries; with a working population of about 20 million, it only takes 100,000 people to be earning £1m (and I'd bet that's not far off the average for the top 100,000) to reduce the average for the rest to just £20k.

Add to that the fact that some of the people on/around/below the average wage have 30+ years of experience and acquired skills, and you then get a bit of perspective on what a 19yr old who has left a college course that has no relevance to the job would be paid.

A 20yr old I know started working for nationwide Building socitey as a cashier a few weeks ago and is roughly £17500. mayb its better pay as you have to work 2 saturdays a month from 9-12 lol.

That is odd when their website lists the starting salary at £13,450 ... Somebody has been telling porkies! :p
    Gone ... or have I?

Also it's distorted by geographical region (and within region by area), When you look at specific region, the average salary is a lot lower and most people aren't earning that. For example, the average median (so 50% earn less than this) household income in Blackburn and Darwin is £23,000-£24,000.

Have you tried getting back to the supermarket? Better pay, conditions, perks and prospects especially for kids about your age that are hardworking and enthusiastic. Also a variety of jobs so if one doesn't suit you can move around.

Store managers earn a packet + bonuses and aren't all graduates many work their way up from the fish counter or checkout.

I do about 34 hours a week and I am in a full time position. I earn just over the 8k mark..

Can you not do extra hours - even 34 hours a week isn't really full time.

Sadly, without qualifications or anything particularly unique or useful to sell in the (labour) market you are going to struggle to earn more. There are more drones than drone level positions and that problem is going to get worse.
Even qualifications do not guarantee you a job, I am proof of that (although there are other reasons employers turn me down).
Wanted a job, now have one.

Sure but as a general rule of thumb, a 19 year old with no qualifications, no experience and nothing unique to offer doesn't have a lot of choice. That doesn't mean that things are still difficult for people with qualifications (especially with tory boy George taking the economy back into recession...)
