19 Seeking a reasonable wage

  • You're thinking of the shift runners, above that (store manager, regional manager etc) you'll find those managers can make quite a bit and get perks like company cars etc. One of the best management programs out there and places on their graduate scheme go like crazy.

Meaningless statistic as it is skewed by significant numbers earning significant sums above 25k who are likely to be much older than you. I expect lots of teenagers are hovering around the NMW mark unless they have significant qualifications, skills or experience.

Part of your unhappiness is due to your working conditions and another contribution to it is a car that seems to eat away at your disposable income. If you did want to retrain in another area, chances are that kind of financial commitment will be an even bigger burden on you.

Have you identified a well paying career that you are really interested in doing for the work, not just for the salary?

You have one thing that a lot of people posting on this board don't have - a job!! Those at the bottom of the chain always get shouted out, so you're not alone. Not pleasant, but it's how things are.

Many of those without jobs are better qualified than you, start being positive!

Average wage £25k? Where abouts is that?

Me and my husband we are both over 30 and both in middle management positions and we are both earning way under £25k each!

Like others have said, consider yourself lucky to have a job, in the meanwhile just keep your eye for another one, more suitable for you. Good luck!

Im sorry to hear that age makes any difference to working capabalities. I understand there is a lack of experience but I do know the average wage is around 25k and im not asking for anything close :(

@ college I studied computer programming and realised it mid way it was not for me, I did however finish the course but it's not in me to take it further. Would just like to join a company at a reasonable rate and work my way up.

lol, at 19 I was earning £12k in the Army.

Maybe that's your answer. Join the forces, get a trade and a half decent wage.

Excellent idea, and one that should be pushed more at school/ college.
    Gone ... or have I?

This is all true and very good advice.

If you really want to, you can climb the ladder pretty quickly. I worked part time at McD's while I did my A-Levels, I got the staff trainer promotion after about 6 months and the floor manager one after about a year. I could have done the shift runner one about 6 months after that but I was only part time.

Tell your store manager you want to go in for promotion. So many of the staff are only there while studying or part time to fit in around families, or as a stopgap until they can get something better, that they are always quite keen to hang on to people who want to progress.

When I was there, the store managers were pretty well off and never had to get their hands greasy. The higher ups who worked out of regional or head offices were earning well, comparative to the rest of the corporate world. Couldn't have been further away from little old manager me whose main responsibilities involved pandering to customers angry that the cheese wasn't straight enough on their burger, or convincing 16 year old staff to wash their hands after going to the toilet!

There are over 2.5 million people unemployed at the moment.

Although maybe your contempt for your colleagues will be an obstacle to promotion, try not to call them idiots, after all you couldn't do any better either could you?

I'd be happy with your wages as I currently get none and I am 30, plus I have a first class honours degree and a masters.

Suspect the only way you can be guaranteed to make more money are crime, and prostitution (which isn't far removed from being treat like dirt for minimum wage at work IMO). Not the type of jobs most people sign up for.

Insurance costs what it costs, it matters little what your car cost. If you can't afford it you can't.
Wanted a job, now have one.
  • Your arrogance will get you nowhere. McDonalds and the big supermarkets are safe jobs in unsafe times, acting like you're better than everyone else who works there will leave you with all the crap jobs that no one wants to do.

If you apply for a job in a year after working at McD's and you never even progressed to a supervisor level the employers will see you, school leaver, can't use college certificate, worked in McD's and couldn't even get promoted there and your CV will end up in the bin.

    Do wisen up.
