dc2447, I'll be interested in reading the reports of any who try it. Including any who have tried it even at small sizes.0

Hey all,
Switching off features is nothing that we want to ever have to do, however on days such as today the traffic to our site is very directed (most users come straight from the weekly email tip to a specific thread and then leave) and it got very busy 4000+ concurrent users create a lot of database queries. The forum search as you can imagine is now very intensive as we have in excess of 3 and a quarter million posts now that can be searched through for each query hence in removing it we get back a lot of power. This methodology will only ever be used in extreme circumstances and only for minimal periods - we have no intention of stripping the search entirely.
For the techies out there who want to know we have dabbled with using a slave for searches however, due to our set up this did not and could not work as planned. We never want any of our users to miss out on the site and we try very hard to ensure that the forum stays up, its uptime is actually very good and has been for a while. We are moving forward again with the technology we are using for the database back-ends and hopefully these will be in service in the near future. I haven't had much feedback regarding using mysql clustering for db's last time I looked it was very new technology and as previously mentioned the way that vbulletin is built may not suit this architecture.
None of us like to see the site struggling and we're constantly monitoring the status of the site. The machines we are using have continually been improved and tweaking is consistently happening. Sorry for resorting to switching it off but it was only for about an hour and for the benefit of thousands of users, it was a necessity.

Search doesn't seem to work for me - maybe you need to rebuilt the vbulletin search index.0
