The Great Big T-Mobile Data CON
A few of my friends and I have recently been doing some research into which network provides the fastest 3G speeds (subject to network congestion). It was no surprise to find that both Vodafone and 3 were the fastest. Now T-Mobile came in at 1.8 meg download speed using W&W+ (basic package is capped at 3G speed). With the recent T-Mobile data cap fiasco one of my friends added the 10GB Web Max package to one of his lines. Now if you believe T-Mobile the only difference between W&W+ and Web Max is you can use VOIP using Web Max. Not so. In all our recent tests which were carried out at various times and locations we found these results. Using a IPhone, HTC Desire and SE X10 and Samsung Galaxy S. The T-Mobile packages which had W&W+ were capped at a maximum speed of 1.8 meg download speed and 500kbps upload speed. The IPhone all so showed the same result. However when the Web Max package was added on by CS. The speeds changed to between 2-4 meg download speed and up to 1.7 meg upload speed.
To finally confirm this one of my friends ran a number of tests today using a IPhone4. He chose a quite village location so the network was not overloaded. As per normal the IPhone topped out at 1.8 meg download and 400kbps upload. He then called CS and asked them to add the Web Max package. once this was on the speeds increased again to between 2-4 meg.
T-Mobile will not confirm they cap packages but all our tests prove with out doubt the following.
Basic web package capped at 3G speed
Web and Walk + capped at 1.8 meg DL and 500kbps upload
Web Max uncapped full speed.
So if you want fast speed with T-Mobile you have to pay extra to get it.
Just something to think about when you choose your next network.

Wow, stop the presses.
A company charging more for a faster better service, well blow me down with a feather, who would have thought such underhanded things would happen in the uk.
Quick, get in touch with watchdog and Dominic Littlewood, this is clearly a scam of massive proportions,
This has been common knowledge for some time, mainly with the internet addon for android phones......
Just one question op, why would you need such speeds on a mobile?0 -

Yes it has been known for some time that the basic 1GB data bundle was capped at 3G speeds. However if you are on say W&W+ You get 3GB of data but if you want the speeds of say 3 or Vodafone then you have to still pay extra. My point is not paying extra for the larger bundle but having to pay extra for speeds which other networks provide as standard.0 -
Plus there is no mention of these limits on their website unless you do a speedtest on your phone you wont know what speeds you are getting.0

i can confirm that web and walk is capped at 3g speeds (0.3mb or so) web and walk plus is nearer 2mb. I got upgraded from web and walk speeds to web and walk plus when i complained to them i wasnt getting hdspa speeds on my phone. Cost = nothing.
I can confirm that i can get pretty good skype phone calls from it.. so dont know why you would want the max version.0 -
Mine is almost certainly capped at the lower speeds, whenever I do the speedtest it's always at most about 0.3mb download speed (HTC Desire).
My question - how can I contact T-Mobile about this in a way that will ensure they actually uncap my speed (in a way I've read they did for others?). I phoned them once asking about the speed and they said the speeds for the WnW and WnW+ are the same (which, based on all my research, seems to be a lie). What did the people who managed to get the upgrade to faster speeds say? I'm not the best at haggling with customer reps, but I'm getting really frustrated for this slow speed I didn't know I was signing up for.

If its the internet booster your on thats capped at 384kbs.I was on that one too and same as you phoned to get it upgraded but only got through to India CS and all they did was quote me higher prices for different packages.Might be better calling technical support and get someone from the UK.0

Yeah it is the internet booster. Did you manage to get moved on to the higher speed for free in the end?0
