Why do people do this ?

Ive posted in another section for some reasonable ideas for a problem i have. All i have received is a few sarcastic or 'clever' comments. Why do people do this ? I thought this was a decent forum , but have seen comments in the past of people being put off from posting. The thing is no one knows your home situation or anything about you . Everyone presumes you are fit and healthy and have an OH to help you out. Its quite upset me today that from a sensible post ive got this reaction. Oh well, now i know why people just read and dont post !

I have found this to be a friendly forum overall. The majority of people here would try to give good advice.

It is like any site, and the real world, there are always a few who don't want to be helpful. It is just a shame that they tend to be more noticed. It is the internet and posters are anonymous so there tends to be assumptions and reading between the lines.
  • Unfortunately, no-one is compelled to pass an intelligence or compassion-test in order to register here. Which is a pity sometimes but on a public forum you do need to be able to filter out the more moronic and downright unhelpful posts.

It is a terrible shame that anybody has to live their life with a disability but the problem is that unless you tell people beforehand, because the majority of us are not in regular contact with a person who has a disability, we don't expect that someone we speak to on here has one.

Most of us make generalisations about the people we talk to on forums based on our own lives and the people we associate with in the real world.

The suggestion to take your wardrobes apart was actually a valid one, until people were made aware that you are disabled and unable to do this. Your original post even stated that they were too tight to fit round the corner, which gives the impression that you had already tried to do this, thus it would have been very difficult for any respondents to associate what was said to the words of a disabled individual without having that information to begin with.

I think it's hard for people to know the whole story. We only can answer on what information we have in front of us. When posting I think you have to be prepared that not everyone will say what you want to hear. I've had many many posts which have been very hard to read but I posted for other people's opinions, and guess what, that's what I got. Their opinion on what I posted - not taking into account everything else that had happened but I didn't feel necessary or relevant to type.

Is it the wardrobe thread? I think it's a bit unfair to the posters who have given you decent advice, to say that all you have received is sarcastic comments, because some people have taken the time out to give you some good advice. Maybe you could go back and thank them, thus encouraging others to help you out. You didn't make it clear you were disabled in your OP and I am sure if you had, people wouldn't have suggested you move them upstairs.

I don't get the chocolate teapot comment - very bizarre, I'd just ignore it. You get strange people on forums, just as you do in real life.

Edited to add :- after much explaining I get the chocolate teapot comment. It is vaguely funny

I have just read the post you are referring to, and I think to be fair, the replies weren't that bad. You asked about wardrobes in a living room and people just replied to take them apart and put in the bedroom. I think that is a normal reaction. You failed to mention you were disabled and so couldn't - which if the people who replied knew, then they wouldn't have suggested this.

i don't think anyone meant in this situation to upset you or offend you.

Yes, that is the one comment that was not really required.

There is an old saying about a chocolate teapot being useless and I assume because there was mention of a chocolate (coloured) sofa, the person who made that comment thought it would be hilarious.
  • I've read your wardrobe thread and can't see why you are upset enough by one vaguely irreverent comment to start a thread about it.

I just read the other thread and apart from the rather wierd chocolate teapot comment, I didn't take any of them as sarcastic or 'clever' just reasonably sound advice - and I hope you haven't shot yourself in the foot for asking for advice in future.

To be honest, by starting this thread with the header "why do people do this" and then flaming them for trying to help you whilst waving your "I'm disabled flag" you've probably offended more people than anything they've written.

Hope you get it sorted satisfactorily.

I think it is because the OP said - my sofas are chocolate. So the person who replied is asking if the room has to be kept cold (so the sofas don't melt)...........

I'm begining to think that I'm odd I understood it!:rotfl:
