I do remember hearing about a gps app for andriod that uses "open source" maps but i cant quite remember what it was called.

To respond to the OP, Navfree is now available on Android. Its free, the maps are "onboard" (ie no roaming charges or data download). It uses OpenStreetMap for maps mind, so whilst in many places it will be better than a Garmin or TomTom, in some places it will not.0
