    Hey,

I understand it may not be what you guys would call a bargain but I heard a review not that long ago on the BBC JVS consumer clinic. The consumers gave a mattress topper from zonesleep.co.uk a rave review. 9.5 out of 10 so I hear. I'm in the process of buying a new mattress but.......Obviously for a decent one it's gonna cost ££££ so. What are my options? I buy a memory foam one and overheat. I buy a sprung one and run the risk of it causing the same problems as my last. Or I buy a topper to re-vamp my old mattress.

A half decent sprung mattress will cost you say £500 like the one I've got now. It's a double, and due to the V.A.T rise etc getting one of a similar standard will be more expensive. So I'm looking into getting a topper and the best candidate so far is Zonesleep. I've been looking around the site, and they've even got a copy of the review it got on the homepage.

I don't know whether this helps anyone as the topper is £189.99 for a double (cheaper than a new mattress) and if it's as good as they say it is then....well it's a no brainer.

Has anyone got a Zonesleep topper? Would they recommend it? Does it make more sense than buying a mattress?

    Cheers :D

To start with you should NEVER use a mattress protector to revive an old worn out mattress, as the layer under the topper is actually more important.

As for the comparrison, it appears to be staged. Especially when you consider that the alternative was a Hypnia, which aren't really that good a brand anyway. Also the things that the so called testers listed as negative points about the memory foam topper, were the exact things that memory foam should be doing.

If you look at the Foam Vs Fabric section it is full of scare tactics, and exageration. And in some cases lies.

Now I can see some good points like the ventilation, and the fact that it is machine washable. But there seems to be no mention of how seep this fabric is. If it is less than 2" deep, then it can't possibly mould to your body providing even support, and eliminating pressure points, as memory foam does. So it looks like they are comparing two completely different products, that have completely different properties.

I can see some advantages of this product, but the comparrison to memory foam doesn't appear to even stand up. I'd have to reserve judgement until I know more about it, but at the moment the web site appears to be full of the hype and gimmicks that I hate.

I would be interested to hear from you when you have tried it out. And again after 6 months of use.
  • I see your point. But I feel you are mistaken about the BBC review. There is no way that the Jonathan Vernon Smith show is staged as random listeners offer to review the products and get to keep them after. Have you listened to the show before?

It was staged by the fact that they were comparing it to a Hypnia topper. You would think they would have used a decent one. Don't you think that it was the manufacturers who approached Jonathan Vernon to do the review??
  • Just caught up with this thread and thought I'd stick in my 6 pence as I have both types of mattress topper memory foam and zonesleep as I heard the BBC review last December and went for it as I'll try anything to sleep better, in spite of the high price.

Having tried them both it's true they are not the same. The zonesleep one is not memory foam and so much the better for it from my point of view as overheating was my problem.

It is thin (about 2 inches) which worried me until I lay on it. Unlike my memory foam mattress topper you do not sink into it. The fabric visible from the underside and looks like some sort of mesh, soft on top but strong underneath which spreads my body weight and makes it easy to turn on - again unlike and better than memory foam.

Don't want to be critical of this thread but how can two people argue about something neither of them have used!!
  • What would you say to people that are set on memory foam then?Obviously their opinion wont change to regard 'memory-fabric' as better overnight?
Especially as most of the people on this site are trying to save money and from what I can see the topper is quite expensive...

It's not a case of arguing. As I said I am reserving judgement until I know more about it.

Oldagegit says that it is 2" deep, are you sure about this? It's just that on the hype on the web site it boasts about it being much thinner than a memory foam topper. So when you consider that the optimum depth for memory foam is 2" (and not the 3" as it says on the site), then the depth wouldn't be an advantage.

I'm sure you can alsos forgive people for being a bit sceptical when two new members come onto a forum to sing the praises of a new product. Although I do accept that there is a possibility of this being a coincidence.
  • I moved into furnished accomodation just before christmas and have an Ikea mattress on the bed. the mattress hadn't sunk as such but I could feel the springs through it, which made it particularly uncomfortable. I looked at memory foam because my parents bought one for £30 from a discount store and they found it helped them. In the end (as we're on a really tight budget, I bought a goose down topper from Aldi that cost £16.50. Yes it was a little too short but I moved it around a bit until the gap was under the pillow. It made a huge difference and I've been sleeping much better!

So if I understand right, you are still using the mattress that you could feel the springs through (not faulty but just poor quality), but you have a feather topper on it?

Well this is where toppers are most useful, especially if someone is on a tight budget. In this case you used to topper to give you more quilting on a mattress that didn't have much. Many people think you can use them to revive an old mattress with worn out springs, but this doesn't work at all.
  • I don't think singing praise is the right term for my query. I'd just heard that the mattress topper was good as it was receiving good ratings. I'm also curious as to the the feather topper? Will it not lose it's shape with continued use to the point where you'll be able to feel the springs again?
  • And just for clarification, how thick is the Zonesleep topper? I would have thought it would be thinner than 2 inches too?
