Bought a clocked car

A HPI check only checks if there is any accident damage recorded or outstanding finance, it doesn't tell you the car has been clocked or if the cambelt is due to be changed. It seems you went to see a car the HPI was clear so it must be a good buy. The clues were there right in front of you, first being the V5 not in his name (claiming not to be a trader), secondly the lack of receipts for major work. You have made a mistake but you have a car that has been reliable and hasn't cost you any real money so far. You could have bought a genuine 65k car for 3 grand that could have been a money pit.
I'm not saying its right what they have done but you can't be complaining about how tight your money is then your willing to spend everything you have to fight this crusade that TS with a whole legal team at their disposal can't win. At the end of the day its your money, if you take them to court the most your going to get is compensation, which is unlikely to get paid. You won't get these guys put away or even stop them from continuing. There may even be information that TS are holding back from you, which maybe the reason they aren't pursuing right now, they just might be the smaller fisher in a larger pond so to speak. just because action doesn't seem to be happening right now doesn't mean its all stopped investigation wise.
Thanks for that,i see the sense in what you are saying and know im the one who made the mistake,i just wish things were in place to stop this happening to honest people especially when presented to people like TS.I will be seeking more legal advice who will probably say what you have said, its just hard to swallow sometimes.0 -

Hes still in the country mate trust me,hes still buying and selling. The problem is identifying him as he has a twin brother.Hard to believe when he has facial scars probably from a previous kicking and he is clearly seen on streetview drinking tea stood outside his house i bought the car from.0 -
For sure its hard to swallow pride is right royal !!!!! lol. Seriously though take a step back and look at it, what can you really do?? If the law isn't going to protect buyers and a legal team from TS who deal with this sort thing day in day out can't take them on then you stand very little chance. Sometimes the harder thing to do is knowing when to call it a day, suck it up and walk away.
You have learnt a serious lesson on car buying and you have been stung, i'm sure you will never let it happen again and i'm sure you have told all those close to you your experiences and they too will avoid the pitfalls. Along with the countless people who have also read this thread, so i'm sure you have a lot of people to avoid this happening to them without even realising it.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

i'd avoid court, i'd also avoid going round and knocking him out but I wouldn't be adverse to some revenge lol. Not many people are likely to buy a car from him if the paint has peeled off or the tyres don't hold air. Not that i'm suggesting you do any of that as its criminal damage....................Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

Would you believe when i bought the car he drove it out of his garage.
I would never suggest you are implying any criminal damage but i do know revenge is sweet.;)0 -
I usually find that people who buy cars from private houses and ignore wake up calls like no log book do it because the car is a lot cheaper than a dealers.
Thankfully this new sorn arrangement is going to mean that a lot of people are finally going to get it into their heads that a dealer is usually a better place to shop anyway with choice and obviously a free balloon on a bank holiday wet monday:D
theres always been chancers and rogues in this job and i really believe many people only see a bargain through greedy eyes when they know something aint right
Ive seen first hand trading standards doing sweet flip nothing and at the end of the day its money out of a legitimate traders pocket.
But life goes on

Im also in a dilemma about selling it.,do i correct the mileage to around a figure it should be and sell taking a loss,or do i say nothing sell and hope i dont get any comeback, which isnt really me.
Ive been offered from well known online buyer £2550 at 63000 with history and £1550 at 160000 with no history.

You do realise that if you knowingly sell the care on without mentioning it's clocked you are committing an offense?0 -

Have to agree here.
There should have been alarm bells ringing all over this one from the moment the O/P arrived.
I suspect the O/P thought they were getting a bargain and ignored the warning signs.
If the O/P is going to keep the car indefinitely and its otherwise going well, then their loss in the long term will be minimal.
Sadly there are con men out there. Always have been, always will be. The bottom line is people like that rarely really succeed in life and they do come a cropper at some point.0 -

Revenge isnt sweet.
The thought of it just starts to take over your life and you begin to fester on it.
Lifes too short. Move on.0
