Pc no longer works properly after Avast update/uninstall

I dont have a boot screen. Since I selected safe mode boot in msconfig, I have no screen at all, the boot process lasts for maybe 4 seconds then stops.
Pc starts > POST > normal start up hard drive noises > light on keyboard comes on as normal> then everything stops, no more noise, no lights, no screens, nothing.
When I try with the cd, the drive spins but nothing else happens.Herman - MP for all!0 -

DO you get the BIOS spash screen up? If so press either f2 OR DELETE to get into the BIOS. If not has your monitor cable come loose4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . No, no bios screen. I have two monitors attached, both are fine, both cables secure.Herman - MP for all!0

I have to go out , sorry, are both monitors on outputs from the Graphics card ? or is one on the motherboard port . Seems a bit strange. There may be a loose connection in the pc somewhere but someone else may help meanwhile, will be back later anyhow. Good luck . Very strange you do not get a splash screen at boot.....4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Well whadd'ya know?! It's loaded!
I'd taken the Windows disk out and tried one last cold boot and it didn't do anything so I left it with the intention of removing the hard drive after dinner.
Nearly half an hour later and it suddenly started to load (albeit painfully slowly). Why on earth would it take that long? It loaded into safe mode (I assume that's because it was the last selection made in msconfig) so I used the Avast uninstall utility linked to above and it worked, Avast is gone and my pc is working again as it should. All my icons are back (including Malwarebytes and CC which had vanished from the desktop along with the icons from the sys tray), my network connection is as it should be and the machine is as speedy as it ever was.
I'm shocked an antivirus software issue could bring a machine to it's knees like that, I've never experienced anything like it before. Avast wont be going back on here, that was more than just a little issue and I'm not up for a possible repeat.
I have the same Avast on a laptop and a netbook and not had any bother with those, there must be something on this particular machine that conflicted badly with the Avast upgrade.
Thanks to all for the help and suggestions.Herman - MP for all!0 -
do you have zonealarm on that machine by any chance? as i have heard that zonealarm and the recent avast update has had a few issuesDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Nope, no zonealarm.Herman - MP for all!0

Are both your laptop & netbook running Windows 7 and have you applied the recent Avast update to both of them without any issues?
Would be handy to try and pin the update problem down.0 -
The netbook has Win XP and the laptop has Win 7 but 32 bit Home edition. (Main pc is 64 bit. No idea how relevent that may/may not be.) Yes, been updated.Herman - MP for all!0
