Pc no longer works properly after Avast update/uninstall

Windows 7 pc worked fine up until a restart this morning. Avast did an update late last night and wanted to restart the pc but I needed it on so just closed down the 'restart now' option. This morning after being online and checking email, I restarted the pc so Avast could finish it's update.
When it retarted, I had an exclamation beside the network icon in the sys tray and I had no network access. (Wireless is disabled as I connect via cat 6). I tried various things to regain network access but no joy. So I tried system restore, didn't work so I tried an earlier restore point. That didn't work either.
I then uninstalled Avast and that's when things really hit the fan. I now have a pc that responds to nothing. It partially loads (I get 3 icons in my sys tray when there should be around 6 or 7) and nothing works when it's clicked on, not even system restore. I've just tried shuting it down completely to try loading from cold boot and it's still trying to shut down 5 minutes later.
Suggestions please before I drop kick the thing out the window?

Try the avast uninstall utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility. Then use a reg cleaner, restart and try using Free AVG.0

Uninstalling and moving on IMO is not solving the problem, just sidestepping it...- When a problem arises - don’t jump to conclusions too quickly. It’s always important how the vendor responds to such things, so you should always give them the opportunity to respond. You’ll see that the problem can often be solved while still using the product, whereas making a knee-jerk decision to uninstall and switching to another product provides no guarantee that the problem will not persist.
That is just my opinion though...
aliasojo,
What version of avast is it (free, pro, IS - Version #)
Any other security software that could conflict?
What was the previous AV, as if not uninstalled correctly this could cause problems.
If you are going to re-install avast, it may be an idea to follow the instructions set out here:

Somebody posted yesterday about this exact problem. It was fixed for them by uninstall followed by manual install of the latest download. That suggests it was the upgrade process that went wrong somehow.

[...]
Every time I read a problem and someone, rather than trying to help/resolve the problem, the response is uninstall it...That does not solve the problem, it is the same as turning your back on it...
I quote from the 'founder' of AVGforums.com (Wed 01 Dec 2010) who said in a post:
We're noticing a few problems which can only be resolved by a complete removal of AVG [2011] and re-installation. [...] This resolves a lot of little quirks and installation-related issues.
The alternative to an uninstall/reinstall could well be a completely unproductive and time-consuming technical investigation, with no guarantee whatever of success.0 -
Can't boot into safe mode. Shutting down/restarting takes forever, hitting F8 causes the pc to hang. Eventually got it to load after pulling the plug and restarting 3 times. Tried to get into safe mode by administrative tools > system config > boot > safe mode but retarting just causes the thing to hang/freeze again and it's now doing nothing. Not one thing. No start up noises (after initial POST), no loading screens, the keyboard will light as it usually does but the monitor wont, so it clearly only gets so far in the restart process when safe mode is selected.
Now that I cant boot at all, am I looking at a reformat/re-install?
spg....it's the free version and has been on the pc since I reformatted and moved from Vista to Win 7 64. I see your point but I want shot tbh.Herman - MP for all!0 -
just never install avast again it never finds any virus's or virii ( what is the correct term for this)
i have tested this by purposesly installed virus into my machine with various virus programs on it.
avg, avast, mcaffee, never find them
but put the same viurus on a eset nod32 machine and it sees them as soon as the memory stick is accessed the other programs let you run them and fully infect the machine which leaves you wide open for cyberspace rape.
kaspersky has a good attempt at it
the top ones if you can get hold off them are the commerical types like "symantec endpoint" and "mcafee end point" totally different beasts to the normal ones people have. these can probably see the virus on the memory stick before you put it in the machine lol0 -

Used avast for years no problems and it has even detected viruses.
Certainly no reason to pay for anti-virus stuff at all.0
