Before I decided to visit a branch I requested an application pack by mail, which arrived this morning. I noticed that it has a unique reference on it and assume that if you get one of these and it arrives soon after the issue is closed the account will still be opened. It may be worth applying for a pack on-line rather than printing a form from the internet and posting it.

I can confirm if you already have an account like the esaver4 you can just phone up, open a fixed 5 year and they will give you an account number on the phone. Wait an hour for their computers to catch up and go online to transfer deposit from the esaver to the fixed. The fixed will not appear in your list of accounts because it is not a web based account, so you just do an internal transfer to the account number given on the phone. I then phoned up to confirm everything was ok and as should be and the info above was confirmed by the NR staff.

I am new to Northern Rock and live a long way from any branches. I rang up and was given my account number over the phone. I was given the choice of being able to pay in by CHAPS, BACS or by Cheque. If sending a cheque the very helpful lady said it was best to send it to make sure it arrived on Monday.

I wouldn't have liked my chances waiting for a BACS.

I opened this acc on Friday 21 Jan by phone.
Just rang to see how long I had to fund it.
They confirmed I had till this Friday - so I said,
"A cheque taken to branch on Friday 28 Jan will be accepted?"
    "Yes"
    EDIT
    V
isited branch today Thurs 27 Jan, and deposited a cheque which was accepted.
    Maybe it's just me

I was told that BACS in progress and/or chqs in post today would still be honoured. Shouldn't think that would extend much beyond next 24/48 hours though.

It still seems to be possible to apply on-line, if you do that right now and send off (say) a cheque straight away with the application there must be every chance they will accept it, albeit no guarantees there as the account terms probably allow them to reject it in theory.

Well it looks as if (unusually) I am lucky on this one, I have a NR fixed rate maturing on Feb 1st, had the paper work offering this account and they say that as long as I give instructions by 31st Jan they will honour the account.

So they will honour the original investment if they close it but not sure if I can add any more after that date even if I apply before 31st, I suspect they would return any additional monies.

It disappeared from the Northern Rock website at about 9:45am this morning. Thanks to all who posted to give us warning of when it would close.

Has anybody given notice to withdraw or close the account yet? Did you do it in branch or by phone or by letter? Did they explain the 14 day window period after the 180 days notice was up? Did they confirm if you did nothing in the 14 day window the account would just run on? Did you have to specify how much you were going to withdraw? Did they give the impression when you come to withdraw you can withdraw less than you stated? (e.g. if you said I give notice to withdraw 20K could you actually withdraw say 10K after the notice period was up)?

Would be useful if we can share any information that might help in answering these questions.
