From what i gather if its uninsured it must be SORN'd. You dont need insurance for something that is
    garaged.

So every car collector, garage must have insurance for every car, Can you see that working?

Im sure this was mentioned years ago, Cars much be taxed and insured at all times, But questions arose
what if a cars just a pile of bits waiting to be restored? Then SORN came in.

I agree any car not covered by a policy listing its registration number should be SORN, Cuts down on people
buying a high powered car they cannot afford to insure register it in the cats name then drive it under 3rd
party cover on their policy for a 1L micra.

  • From early 2011 a new law gives us and the motor insurers bureau more power to deal with keepers of vehicles that are not insured. We will compare our records with those held on the database to identify keepers of vehicles without insurance.
If your vehicle is not insured and you have not made a SORM, you may be fined, or your vehicle may be clamped, seized and may be disposed. You could also be prosecuted.

From reading this I'd say so long as it is SORN, you should be fine.

From early 2011 a new scheme is being introduced to make sure that all vehicles stay insured or a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) is made. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) are working together to reduce the number of uninsured drivers.
    The fight against uninsured vehicles

Latest public estimates are that around 1.5 million of all UK motorists drive uninsured. These drivers cost the UK about £500 million annually, which adds up to an average cost of an extra £30 per car insurance policy.
The police already seize about 500 uninsured vehicles every day. To help combat uninsured driving even further, when the new law is introduced it will result in:
    • fines
    • prosecutions
    • clamping of uninsured vehicles that have not declared Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)
Records held by DVLA will be compared with those on the Motor Insurance Database (MID).
From early 2011, if it appears from the database comparison that a vehicle has no insurance or no SORN, a letter will be sent to the registered keeper.
If the keeper takes no action, the keeper faces:
    • a fixed penalty fine of £100
    • court prosecution and be fined up to £1,000
    • having the vehicle clamped, seized and destroyed
What to do as a vehicle keeper

If you are not insured and use your vehicle on the road you are already committing an offence – get insured immediately.
If you are keeping your vehicle off the road, make sure that you have submitted a SORN declaration to DVLA. If the vehicle is taxed you need to return the disc (including nil value discs) to DVLA using a V14 form. You can make a SORN declaration at the same time as returning the disc on the V14.

your insurance will only cover the other vehicle if you are fully comp and the other vehicle is insured to a minimum of third party

    Haven't we been here before?
I can drive a car on my third party extension, without the other car having any other insurance in force.
The government, and the insurance companies agree, hence the forthcoming change in legislation.

    Not always the case.

Anyone anticipating driving someone else's car on their own insurance would be well advised to study their policy before doing so.

We'll agree you don't drive it, but I will.

mikey72, il agree to disagree with you, ive googled the question and im getting conflicting answers.
A few interesting points to note, if you drive the other car using your policy then it wont show up on an ANPR system, you wont be able to tax the car and if you leave it on a public highway then the car would be uninsured and if impounded would not be retrievable with your policy
