Give your mobile a fake number

  • If the call is going to come to your own phone anyway, then it doesn't really matter whether they've got your real number or a fake one. If I don't want someone to have my number it's cos I don't want them to call me - on any number!

you're right but we can punish them by saying you are interested please just hold for a few minutes and it will cost them lots!

Does anyone know of one that does 50p a minute with revenue sharing? I know a few years ago there were some that shared revenue with you at half of around 35p a minute but i understand this was stopped. anyone know for sure?

All of this was stopped a couple of years ago by OfCom on the 070 numbers, mainly due to the large amount of scams that had been operated using those numbers. People were putting false adverts out, saying they were selling a car for a tenner - and giving their 070 number for contact. Quite often that was answered by a mobile phone answering service as they'd bought a cheap SIM and were using that to run up a few minutes at a time, thereby gaining some revenue.

As a quick example, to anyone who ever called a number like that, the call cost was usually similar to mobile rate, perhaps 37p a minute - so you would pay about £1.50 for a 4 minute call, and the person holding the number would make about 65p of that - clear profit!

I was a dealer for a few ranges of numbers at the time, from 0800 freefone to 09* premium rate. Due to the actions of scammers I stopped as I was getting far too many numbers investigated, despite having a signed contract for each and every one issued.

If you are unsure of the cost of a call try http://www.ukphoneinfo.com/ and use the code locator. It works for the majority of UK codes as it's linked to the current OfTel database.

These numbers do not accept text messages, but they will take calls - which are diverted to your phone. Does that explain it better?

I still have a couple of 07021 numbers active, which I give to banks and register on websites where I just HAVE to give a number or they don't like me. If they do call me then they're paying for the call, so it does not bother me. They don't get my real mobile number either.

You can still get these numbers if you look around.
