Sky +

Hi there

I've just introduced a friend to sky so get a free sky + box. Obviously nothing with them is free so I have to pay £60 installation.

Does anybody know what the 'installation' entails? Is it something anyone could do?

Any help appreciated - many thanks
Simon

I dont know exactly what it involved Simon but when I had mine installed it did involve the dish as well as just the box so Im guessing its not easy to switch your self

Have to say though and Im sure some will disagree - Sky + is the best thing i have bought for a long time I suspect you will love it:T
  • Assuming you have Sky already it will involve changing the LNB on the dish to a dual one and running a second cable from the dish to the box.

It is do-able yourself but it might be a condition of the offer that Sky's contractor does the work. (they probably pay him less than £60!).
  • Can't see why anybody would want sky or even sky+ when a version which is as good is available via freeview? You have to watch a serious amount of tv to make it worth it.

  • I disagree mewrcurystar999. There is much, much more available on Sky than on Freeview, especially if you subscribe. Also, Sky is available pretty much anywhere but Freeview won't be until analogue is switched off over the next five or six years.
  • Hi Simon

Can I refer you to my second post (towards the end) in this thread

Basically, Sky seem to insist on "installation" whether or not you need it!
  • Yes but out of all the channels available there isn't much more worth watching. My sister in law pays out over £60 a month thats an awful amount of money. If you then un subscribe to sky you either lose sky+ or have yo pay £10 a month. Rip off!!!

Was looking at this offer recently

You get free installation as long as you choose to get sky multiroom which is £10 a month so £120 for the year to have a second box in the house otherwise they will charge you £60 for installation

Apparantly you need to subscirbe to two preium channels i.e. sky sports 1 and 2 or movies otherwise you get charged £10 a month subscription charge for SKY+ so its even more money you have to fork out

don't forget for multi-room you need to have your phone line connected to your boxes all the time.

It comes down to what kind of TV you like I suppose. You may be happy with the free stuff but many people are prepared to pay extra for more choice. Incidentally, I thought the maximum monthly sub was £43.50 so presumably your sister in law takes some of the specialist channels too.

I agree that charging full price for the Sky+ box plus £10 a month (if you don't take premium channels) is a bit cheeky but have to admit it's (just about) worth it for me!
  • Hi,

Sky will get as much money as they can out of you and who can blame them, after all its a business. I have been getting back to back special offers for almost a year now a 6 mix which costs £21 I think for half price. They offer it for 3 mths at a time, what you have to do is ring 30 days before special offer ends (notice period) and if not offered another special offer then you cancel. When you do cancel within the 30 day notice period if not offered another special offer then you have time to ring again before you are switched off and a differect sky rep probalby will offer you something since you have cancelled and they know you are serious. Most times they will always offer you something, and even if they dont you will probably get a letter from them within 6 months with something like a big kiss on it and slogan "lets kiss and make up" and of course another special offer of 3 mths at half price...lol, so the ball starts rolling again. Its a bit of a pain in the neck ringing every 2 mths but in my case I am saving £10.50 a month, so I feel its worth it. I will never pay full price again for any sky package, Im a special offer only person.

One thing to be careful of is, with some of sky's special offers if you happen to cancel within the offer period beofre the 3 mths runs out is that you may well get charged the full price. This rule doesn't apply to every offer but does apply to a lot of them. Make sure that you are aware of the conditions of the offer and that you write down all the info like cancel date to ring etc and who you talked to at sky, in case of any problems as regards billing.
