Sky+ box is kapputt!

The disk on my Pace (40gb) Sky+ receiver is kapputt. I've been quoted £90 for a new disk (fitted) or £150 for a new box (80gb disk) by my local TV fixer.
Couple of questions...
Anyone know anywhere online that you can buy a Sky+ receiver for less than that (had no real luck with Google/Kelkoo etc).

Could you buy and fit a hard disk yourself?
Haven't done it myself, but I'm told it's a fairly straightforward process:dance:There's a real buzz about the neighbourhood :dance:0 -
You could always try fitting a drive yourself. If you Google "upgrade sky+ hdd" you will find plent of guides and advice for installing a bigger hard drive and the compatible drive to buy. You culd probably pick up a 40GB drive for less than £30 on ebay or bigger for not much more. Alternatively, you can probably pick up a new box for between £50 to £80 on ebay, and sell your old one as faulty for around £20 + p&p to offset some of the cost. Finally, you could always ring Sky and threaten to cancel. When they ask why just tell them your sky+ box has broken and you can't afford to fix/replace it. They may offer you a free or discounted replacement or refurbished box.0

They (Sky) have also been known to do free service engineer call outs......:dance:There's a real buzz about the neighbourhood :dance:0 -
This is from Hubby of Mizz Pink
If you are good with a screwdriver you can repair it yourself, ill put a link to the correct sites for upgrade instructions, it envolves turning off the REWIND feature in the SKY+ menu, unplug the box, swap the hard drive and power up and do a reset in a secret menu.
Perform A "Full System Reset" (Press Services,4,0,1,Select,8 Housekeeping)
Note: on the instructions its not clear you need to press the SELECT button after 0 and 1 - Thats where I fell over to start with!!!
I upgraded my hard disk as we kept filling up the 40GB drive I put a 250GB drive in - it runs a little hot and sometimes sticks so be careful when you buy a drive. if youre not too fussed about extra storage probably go for an 80GB drive as they are within a few pounds of a 40GB (approx £30 inc) I bought my 250GB drive for £47.
I would recommend a Seagate/Maxtor (same company as they have merged) or a Samsung drive (Western Digital and Fujitsu are not so good).

is the link. Its all in words and pictures and literally takes about 10 mins to do.
Hope this is helpful to you, and all those who keep filling up their SKY+ and want to upgrade the size of their disk.Just owe Dad £2500 for a new car

That is what i would do . Ring sky and say you are a loyal customer ( if you are ) Explain what has happened and they should offer you a deal at least . Fingers crossed .0

Thanks to all of you... I got a good result!
I rang Sky to enquire about purchasing a new box. They said sure... £99 for the box + £60 installation charge. I said I don't need any installation (i.e. all the cables are there etc etc - I just need to plug it in). They said "you have to have the installation we won't sell you a box without it". I was not happy
and told them so. "Sorry that's the way it is" was all I got.
Apart from thinking this is immoral trading practice I now think that Sky sucks... or I did.
I then said... please put me through to somebody who can cancel my subscription (I'm on Sky Sports + Prem Plus ... i.e. £37/month + £60 annually). I got through to a really helpful lady who said "hang on a mo".
She came back and said "we'll do you a free engineer visit and a free exchange"
Brilliant! A result...
Many thanks again to you all for your suggestions...0 -
