Ah bless, nice recovery
Thing is I thought he might have been right and the IPO site out of date because they've been talking about changing it for years.
(I know he says he's not coming back so do I PM him...)

So in summary what you're saying is people are incapable of learning new things and don't care about DRM etc and thats why the kindle is so good and calibre is way to complicated. But amazon are somehow damaging the ebook market and ebooks in general because of there syncing technology, which they use only to delete your books, and their own ebook format which isn't epub and therefore not “open” (whatever that means). Not only this but somehow it has to do with the government passing the digital economy bill which is also really bad.
Either way the kindle is the best ereader atm and amazon provide a very good service if you're willing to pay their prices (which are mostly cheaper than their competitors). If you don't like the kindle, don't buy it.
Theres no conspiracy my dear tin foil hat wearing fool.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Your insistence that people will Google everything is a little optimistic if not outright naive when it comes to the level of IT knowledge in the population (that, by the way darling, is me being condescending
).
People generally don't have the time, interest or know that they should be searching something like DRM removal and converting formats (People struggle with csv files and excel). If they were at that level then this forum would be a lot less busy.
I understand you are a Kindle fan but you shouldn't take people pointing out the failings of a device and its company as a personal insult, you only purchased it after all. (Yep still in condescending mode if you wondered, going to try and stop now).
Open refers to the fact it's an "open standard" and this has nothing to do with if a file has DRM, rather it's that the specification for the file is available. It means that people can create hardware/software to support the format by reading the documentation, they are more likely to be tied into a vendor that uses a proprietary format.
Sales are high for kindle because it can't be beaten on price at the moment, it is very easy to use (no Googling required) and comes from a respected brand name.
Epub isn't perfect, not great for graphic novels, no standard for DRM implementation and others issues. But if someone buys an EPUB book there is a better chance it'll work on future devices wherever they go out of the box.

No the Digital Economy Bill would effect you because it's a rushed, atrociously written law that was pushed through at the behest of a rich lobbying group by a cash strapped political party in it's last days as a failing government.
It had to do with the kindle because I was talking about the ability of Amazon to remove books and although it may seem unthinkable for a government to pass laws to allow the control of our information, it has already been done.
Was I suggesting you've infringing copyright? well I wasn't but chances are that yes you have, from videoing TV, ripping your own CDs, converting e-book to different format, perhaps more but nothing that I care about.
Well yes Calibre plugins are basically (python) scripts but I meant plugins when I said modifying it.
I said external scripts as that's actually what I do, I don't use plugins for DRM removals because it doesn't suit my method of working. I have a library of scripts (python and bat) downloaded, some modified and a few written from scratch. These are used for DRM removal, conversion (to epub), finding and replacing typical errors from said conversions, formatting page orders (I like a cover page then prelude/first chapter right away, with any indexes, copyright, about, etc pages at the back) and finally links to applications used to edit my e-books - then I import, catalogue and transfer with Calibre. (Yes all with the help of Google).
No I wouldn't expect others to do the same unless they had a legacy of ebooks in numerous formats, with exacting high standards.
Hi, I have python scripts for epub and pdf and then convert with calibre but although I have googledI cannot find one that works for mobipocket. Does a imple script exist for mobipockets that are DRM and will calibre then convert them to mobi for the kindle?
Thanks0 -
Hi,
I'm guessing you're just interested to see how it works for research.
Search for mobidedrm005.py in google. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-strip-mobi-and-prc-ebooks-of-encryption/ Gave a nicer overview than I ever got (especially around the PID) but the links seem out of date, comments look helpful.
There are three scripts I have, try the 005 one first (it's newest) then move down. I've not had it fail on me yet.
mobidedrm002.py
mobidedrm005.py
mobidedrm.py
Using windows I open command prompt and change directory to where the DRM book is
The Parameters are:
<Script> <DRM_Bookname.prc> <Output.prc> <PID>
mobidedrm005.py 0759561648pdf.prc outfile.prc XXXXX
You can usually get your PID number from the about menu on the device/software you downloaded it to.
As far as I'm aware you wouldn't have to convert them for your kindle because it can read non DRM Mobi books but yes you can then import and convert as usual. Hope this helps.
EDIT2: Seems there are a number of revisions to the scripts out there but at least you've had a start.Santander are awful - mission in life is to warn people since 17-Sep-10, 18-Sep-10 realised one of thousands.0 -
No need to apologise to me if you're feeding trolls I'm not the manager of this thread, though with the length of your replies and the amount of paranoia in them is there any wonder?;)Santander are awful - mission in life is to warn people since 17-Sep-10, 18-Sep-10 realised one of thousands.0

i have both the sony e reader and now have the kindle and the kindle wins hands down for me as i like to get books on impulse which the kindle allows me to do
sony ereader you have to download it to computer and then transfer it so no good if on holiday or near the computer but the kindle is a dead easy and you can download books papers anywhere i was in mexico most of jan and downloaded and bought loads of books when i was there
you dont have to be techie to use it at all , its pretty simple once you have charged it and switched it on
just set up credit card with amazon so that you dont have to log in each time you want to buy a book
i would reccomend getting the more expensive one if you want to download books abroad with 3G
It wont replace books but as a replacement for not having to carry loads of books then its great0 -
Can`t make my mind up - any thoughts?0
