How long are you going on holiday for? You will most likely read one full book, maybe two?
When I'm not on holiday, I go through at least 10 books a month, for a 2 weeks holiday I need at least 10 and even then I have to limit my reading otherwise I'd run out. Many places, like my local pub, actually have free libraries where you bring your old books and swap them with other books you haven't read.
Yep, my pub does that too, the problem is that there's never anything I want to read (I'm not one for the bestsellers and "easy read" type books)I did admit I am anti ebooks. :rotfl:
I just don't see the point in them.
Go try oneThey are just fab. Plus you can get tons of out-of-copyright classics for free from project gutenberg and there's a lot of really good books published by indie writers which cost less than £1
If you already have a laptop, why not just download a free program to read ebooks, and take that with you?
Because reading from an e-ink screen is exactly the same experience as reading from paper, so no problems in sunlight like a laptop screen, it's light (would you take your laptop to the beach?!) and the battery charges lasts for weeks, not hours.
I love my paper books and still buy them but I love my ereaders tooNow free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -
Yes, I suppose I may be exaggerating a bit.
But still I bet that someone might want to swipe your nifty new £100 + gadget though, rather than your old book.
Also what about charging it, what if it runs out mid sentence, whilst your at the beach?
lol. well, given that all you can do is read books on it, and the screen is black and white... I don't know if it's very attractive to a thief. I'm pretty sure that they'd go for the mobile rather than the book reader lol. Amazon can also block a Kindle if it's stolen so no-one would be able to register it to their account and download books.
Battery goes on for ages as there's no power hungry LCD... I get about 3 weeks of battery life out of 1 charge reading for over 5 hours a day lolNow free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -
I got a Kindle for Christmas - my OH bought it for me as I travel a fair bit with work. I must admit I though initally it was a bit of a gimmick and a lot of money for what it was - but I love it. I got the 3G version and it's really easy to download books. Tons of choice (I have no issue being tied to Amazon as they have a massive range) - I've read far more with my Kindle than if I read paperback books and now wouldn't travel anywhere without it.
It would be good if there was a backlight option - but then reading in the dark prob isn't best for the old eyesight anywayFeb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

^ all you can do is read books on them, but it costs you £100 +!
Anything with value would be attractive to a thief.
Sorry, but I'll never be convinced, I just don't like them.
I suppose I can see the appeal to a big book reader.
But going back to the OP, they said they are not techie minded and can just get around the laptop, they are now going to have to learn how to use the ebook, download books, install them, etc.
Personally I would just skip the ebook out completely, save the expense, download a free program for the laptop or stick to actual books.0 -
Bookcases for 3500 books would cost me waaaaaaaaay more than £100 and all I can do is store books in them
lol even my mum, who is the most tech-useless person in the world, can work out how to get books on the Kindle (yes, I've let her use it!) whilst she still struggles to attach a file to an email and she finds things like sms and mms "difficult" ... Granted, the Sony does require some faffing about (all relative of course)Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -
I have over 7000 books on my Sovos Ereader, which is just £70 online or £80 from John Lewis.
I dislike both the Kindle and Sony ereaders.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

Ive found my ereader offers me more flexibilty on what i read too, as i have joined several e libraries (am lucky that where i live has a pretty good one)
I've not yet brought one book since ive had my ereader, but due to the fact i can download a wide selection for free off the net or from the libraries have read more than ever - so sure it wont be long until my ereader has paid for itself and i have more space in my home!0 -
Reading a book a day, it will only take you just over 19 years to get through that little lot.
I'm never going to read them all but like having the choice.
Similarly I have 1.2 Tb of audio files - about half mp3 vbr and half flac.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.
