Don't "cancel" (this will just bring on cancellation fees etc.)

If you know they won't renew the policy, then instruct them to let it "lapse".

I can do that? Won't they still send out a renewal?

If they send out a renewal, then your thread is redundant isn't it?

If you want to go elsewhere, tell them in writing that you want the policy to lapse at its end. Send it recorded delivery then all bases are covered.

Thats true, however what happens if I ask them to lapse and they still send it...

I'm just trying to cover all base's and probably being to cautious.

Also if I called up a new company and they say they needed to speak to there underwriters and then they said no, I can't get insurance does this class as insurance being declined?

Sorry I would also like the above clarified if possible. :)

Everyone who has done an online quote will have been declined. Some companies may only insure certain vehicles
or driver over a certain age etc etc.

I think it boils down to the quote is accepted but then when you try and take out the policy its declined for some
reason the quote failed to pickup.

Previous claims or points or other information not disclosed fully.

Some insurers goto into minute detail on quotes others do not seem to ask as many questions. One asked me if the
car had any factory fitted options which did not generally come fitted to my model. If it was new i might know the
answer, But on a 10 year old car how on earth would i know what was & wasnt fitted as standard?

If they send you a renewal invitation following your instructions to them that you want to lapse then you have the best of both worlds.

    1) If you like the price you can accept the offer (and rescind your lapse)

    2) If you don't like the price just let your instructions stand. (Which is why it's a good idea to send the instructions to lapse the policy in a recorded delivery letter).
  • This is why you never put your real details into a comparison or insurance company site until you know what they will say. You use Mr D Duck with DOB a week or so away from you, same marital status etc. and address down the road from you. Get a reg from a car like your for sale on the net and off you go, all through a dummy email account set up for this very purpose. No trace back to you.

Then, when you know the quote and al the other stuff and are happy to go, you can simply get a new quote using the real data, safe in the knowledge that they won't be refusing the criteria you want to insure. Also stops them storing your personal details.

Sorry I should of been clearer....

If they send out a renewal, saying that I have been declined for the new year.

Despite me asking for a lapse, i.e. them not sending anything.

Where do I stand? As obviously I have received a declined renewal.

It will have no consequences for you.

If that does happen don't I still have to declare on future insurance policies that I have had it denied still?
