Could someone explain : Any driver had insurance declined, cancelled, voided

Options
Hi,

I'm probably being a bit over cautious here... but what do the insurance websites mean by the following:
Any driver had insurance declined, cancelled, voided or special terms imposed

If you get your renewal through and they don't want to renew it (i.e. they think you are to much of a risk)

Is that classed as declined as they choose not to renew the new policy? Or is it just whilst you have the policy and if you have an accident etc.

Thanks for any replies!

If the insurers choose not to renew the policy then that is a declinature. However, why don't you ring them up and find out why - it could be that they have changed their underwriting profile and will no longer insure certain groups of drivers e.g. under 25's, high performance cars etc.

Once you have an answer you can decide what to do - if it is because you have too many claims or convictions then you will need a specialist insurer - if simply change in underwriting profile I would suggest you speak with a broker to see if they can help.

So in that instance I should tick the box to say that I have been declined insurance?

I'm just trying to work out when I should or shouldn't tick the box.

edit: I haven't been declined yet, I just expect to as I have had an accident whilst on this policy ( Which they do know about ) and I no longer meet there criteria of years NCB.

Yes. Your existing insurer has declined cover (or in your case if they do, you would tick yes).

But if you didn't want to renew with them, then they can't have declined an offer (to insure) that you didn't make?

Isn't it similar to junk mail that states "we insure drivers with 4 years NCD", irrelevant as you haven't asked them to insure you.

Or Quinn not writing new policies at renewal- have they therefore declined all their customers whose renewals would have come through during the time they weren't offering policies?

Or running details through one of the comparison sites where certain companies come up as refusing to quote?

No. That is not a refusal as you havent applied for it. If you went on to try and apply for one of those and then they rejected it, then it would be a refusal. However, at quote stage its not.
But if you didn't want to renew with them, then they can't have declined an offer (to insure) that you didn't make?

They would have refused to offer terms at renewal though. You would have to cancel the policy before it ends to avoid that from happening. If it doesnt get to renewal then they cannot refuse to renew it.

You seem to be saying if I put my details into a comparison sit and NIG refuse to quote then that doesn’t count but if I put the same details into the NIG website and they refuse then that does count?

A refusal to quote is not a rejection. A refusal to accept your application is. i dont know the NIG website but if it doesnt give a price then it probably wont let you go on to the application stage. So, you cant be rejected. If they gave you a price, you then applied for it and then they refused to offer cover then that is a rejection. That outcome is unlikely unless new information comes to light after the application which changes the decision.

So if I was to cancel the Policy it negates the chance for them to reject my insurance?

Also if I called them up and they say they needed to speak to there underwriters and then they said no, I can't get insurance does this class as insurance being declined?

Or if I ring any place for a quote and then get told that they can't insure me is this classed as it being declined?

Don't "cancel" (this will just bring on cancellation fees etc.)

If you know they won't renew the policy, then instruct them to let it "lapse".
