I wonder if this link might be useful http://www.blackberryforums.com/rim-software/680-faq-what-methods-receiving-email-blackberry.html

In particular, look at how POP and IMail work in the first post and could that be the reason in your mother's case? I know the thread is old now, but it does explain how she could have clocked up 378MB, which would be less than 1 month's "unlimited" allowance that would cost about £5 for a bolt on in the UK ! Scandalous.

I did wonder if the BB was talking to the RIM server even if there was no email acc set up. This would be completely transparent on the home network as the data would be included in the BB add on.

Olesya; Does your mum's acc have the BB (BIS) add on, on her bill ?
And, if she doesn't use email and doesn't use BB messenger why does she want a Blackberry at all ?
  • what is BB (BIS) add on?

She only got blackberry because they suggested she gets it at the shop when she was renewing her contract.
  • As people have advised you need to ask what the money has been spent on. All transactions create CDRs (Call Duration Records) from the Ukrainian switches (sites) which should be sent on a daily basis. Sometimes there is a delay in recieveing these records which is why Orange say allow upto 3 months for these charges to come through. Good luck with this one as a 3K bill is disgusting !

For a previous month when she was entirely in the UK, how much data does her Orange bill show that she used? If it was abnormally higher outside the UK, then it points to a billing error rather than a handset configuration problem.

    Data charges
Unlike call charges, there is no cap on roaming data charges.
However, to help consumers control how much they spend on data services when travelling, and to address the problem of ‘bill shock’ from unexpectedly high bills, there is a ‘cut-off’ mechanism whereby the data session will be stopped once the customer reaches an agreed limit (unless they consent to continue). This has been available to all consumers since 1 March 2010
There is also an automatic 50 Euro per month limit applied to every mobile phone account – unless you choose a different limit, or indeed opt out altogether.

I have copied the above from the Ofcom website - you might want to check with Orange if an agreed limit was on the account and if not what consent your Mum gave to continue?

The Ofcom page from which you quoted doesn't make it clear that it refers only to roaming in the European Economic Area, of which Ukraine is not a part.
  • Thank you so much for all your responses. I appreciate you spending your precious time to answer this.

Last month data usage was 6.8186 megabytes.

What can we do next?? Where else can I go for help?

Back to the network, I am afraid. Orange have "Business Centres" where they tend to have some trained staff. I suggest that she - possibly accompanied if she has language problems - goes into one of them and asks them to look at her account usage, and history over 3 months, to see if they can see what might be the cause. Do avoid weekends and try to go at a quiet time where they can help.

Customer service technical might also be able to help via 150.

Sounds like the blackberry was using internet at that point. You should always turn off data roaming when going to a foreign country.
