£22 a week sounds a good deal for cleaning and ironing (how many hours does she work ?)

As you have 2 small children and are looking to increase your working hours, then you will have even less time to do the cleaning yourself !!

It is only actually money saving if you cannot earn more than it is currently costing you.

eg. if you were sat at home doing nothing, then it would be money saving to remove this cost.

However, if you are self employed and find that you could earn more than £22in the 4 hours a week you would spend cleaning etc. then you would be better off doing your work and keeping the cleaner (I hope that this makes sense !!)

This makes sense! We are however over spending by about £300.00 pm. If I work 1 extra day and let the cleaner go this would make up the difference and we would be a lot more comfortable and not dipping into the OD all the time.

Believe me...I have done everything the MSE way...probably to the extreme...still short though...
  • Another thing to consider is that if you are working longer hours and the place is a wreck you might feel awful. If you do feel moody you might take it out on the children and your partner. So more work, place like a pigsty and family rows - £22 seems like a bargain to avoid all of that!

You said you run your own business.
Do you do this from home?If so you could justify your cleaner to the taxman am sure ;-)

At 22.50 a week it is a bargin! My cleaner cost 40.00 a week for 2 mornings (4-6 hours) depending on her speed and mood, which I think is very cheap.
3 bed semi in Manchester, 3 grown ups, Myself, son 23 and daughter 19 who will not clean nor tidy up....any tips on how to motivate a girl of 19 on how to clean would be appreciated

Forget motivation, hit her in the pocket. Apportion the time the cleaner takes to clean up after your lazy madam, work out the cost and take it out of her allowance.

I am as prudent as my user name, but the one luxury that has always tempted me as a full time working single mum is a cleaner. Not given in to temptation yet, but would find one very hard to give up.
  • I am desperate to find a good cleaner myself and If I had what you're describing, I would not let her go. Cleaning a 5 bedroom house is hard work, I'm sure that even with your cleaner's help you still have lots to do as far as household chores are concerned. Your quality of life is important and that £22 contributes to it, hence it's money well spent. I find the constant monotonous never-ending housework soul destroying. Maybe cut down one hour but really, I think you're underestimating how important it is to have a cleaner you trust in your house, you feel comfortable around and does a good job for a fair salary. You'll end up wasting precious family time on cleaning. Don't do it!!!

I just want to say a great big thank you to everyone for your positive comments. I honestly thought you were all going to tell me to let her go and stop being so lazy and to clean my own house! But you are all absolutely right. She is a really nice person, she does wonders in 4 hours a week and £22.00 is a bargain by the sounds of it...

You are also right in saying that there is still loads to do despite the fours hours with a 1 year old and a 4 year old and running my own business and renovating the damn house as well. I don't ever sit down before 8:30 after being up at 6:00am and it's mostly after 9:00 that I get something to eat. I don't know where I am going to fit cleaning in as well! Pbradley936...you are right! I'll probably end up being a stroppy mum, with no time for her kids, snowed under with endless ironing and on the verge of anti-depressants again!!!! I guess that's it then....THE CLEANER STAYS ON A COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS approved by MSE!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks everyone
