FWIW i think the children are paramount and you and your ex should communicate as often as is necessary. My husband and his ex exchange texts and e-mails and i sometimes think it would be easier for all if they could talk more often too. I exchange occasional texts and e.mails with my ex and we sometimes talk on the phone too-it's no biggy either way.
It seems that the partner of your ex is very insecure.
