Please help me - my partner has left me, don't know what to do.

hi everyone,
i'm hoping that somebody can help me, i'm so confused.
my partner has left me for somebody else, we have a one year old child together.
he left me last month, and it looks like he won't be coming back as he now lives with another woman. i'm heartbroken and worried and i need to know if i will be entitled to any help.
i'm currently a student in college, my ex was the provider, he paid the mortgage and bills whilst i studied (i finish my studies this summer and shall be going into business for myself) he has agreed to carry on paying the mortgage and council tax, but i will have to take care of everything else. i currently receive CTC and a little bit of WTC on behalf of my ex. I've never received any benefits before and i'm not sure if a student is entitled to anything? i'm not in uni so i don't receive any grants. is it possible to still live in my ex's house with our child whilst he lives somewhere else but still pays the mortgage or will this make all possible benefits null and void? he is going to inform the electoral role of his new address on monday.
also, i was hoping someone could advise me as to what will happen once i become self employed? i've arranged to rent a premises 2 and a half days per week to carry out my work, my baby will need to go into nursery on these days and i can't see my income being great in my first year. certainly no more than £10,000.
i'm so worried and heartbroken and any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.
thanks for taking the time to read this.

What course are you doing and how many hours do they require (study + tuition) per week ?I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

What will be your self-employed buisiness?
You are now single , may be worth looking at registering as self employed early for wtc etc
You would have £0 income and would get max working family/tax credits, but unsure if the is better than the other options.0 -

i will be a massage therapist (swedish massage, hot stone therapy massage, aromatherapy massage, indian head massage) there is good money to be earned, but obviously only when i'm established.
how can i register as self employed early if i'm still studying and not actually self employed? isn't that illegal or am i missing something?0 -
Get yourself an appointment with a welfare rights/benefits advisor asap.
Hopefully they will be able to advise you of the best course of action to take.
If your partner has gone off with someone else you deserve better.
Hope you sort things out quickly.
Good luck.0 -

thank you, it's been a terrible start to the new year. i'm desperate to try and provide a secure environment for my little one, and i'm hoping i can eventually.0 -

You need to find it if it is worth while finacially. As you would lose any benefits as a student.
You can be registered as self employed and technicaly not have any work per say.0 -

i'm not sure i would be entitled to anything being a student, especially as i'm not a university student. it's more along the lines of income support i think, as i would no longer be eligible to receive my ex's WTC (which was very little anyway) i think my CTC would stay the same (£200 per month)
just not sure what would then happen once i became self employed (if i did end up on income support)0 -

unsure but you can work out what you will get on url below
http://taxcredits.hmrc.gov.uk/Qualify/DIQHousehold.aspx
You will still need to see benefit office regarding how much you will get on income support.
When you enter self employed hours on tax credit estimator make sure you enter 36hrs.
