Well all we can do is be prepared, camping gas stoves, bar-b-ques, candles etc. the main thing is to hope its just 3 hours or something like that. Freezers will be fine. Hot water bottles to the ready guys - nothing can beat us O/S'ers. :)

It will however work off a car battery with an inverter.

Thanks but I haven't got a clue about electrics and my husband is even more clueless! :D

Oh God! 3 day week and power cuts
I was a teenager last time around.
My (single) mom worked in a biscuit factory at the time (food production = considered a priority industry) so things weren't as bad as they could have been. I never thought I'd live to see those days return though :(

Yep, I was a kid then too.

The only thing that I can remember was cooking chestnuts in an old pan on the coal fire! :D It was quite exciting.

We had a coal fire and a paraffin heater in the hall so the house was quite warm in the 'living room' and hall but bl**dy freezing in the bedrooms.

    ;)

Fortunately I designed resilience into my home, so I won't be affected by pinko types.

Though I could use a new flask.

I shudder. Not for nights with no tv or light or heat, but for my freezer contents. :( How long will power cut last I wonder. does this mean I shoud lay off whoopsies for the freezer, or fill it up in the hope the solid frozen mass keeps it all ok. :(

They probably won't strike for more than a few hours at a time....after all they have freezers too ;)

    I'm thinking maybe a camping stove/candle party?
Maybe we could come up with some nice camping stove recipes? :)

    Hi mardatha,

As this isn't specific to Old Style I've moved it over to the Gas and Electric board.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. Are all national grid workers Unite members? I'm thinking maybe there'll be some who aren't so it may not get to power cuts and if it does I too think it'll only be for a few hours at a time, as Barneysmom has pointed out the strikers all use electricity in their homes too.

What size inverter do you think?

The bigger the inverter, the faster you will drain the battery,
so it's not an ideal solution.
An interesting possibility is to keep the car running, continuously topping up the battery. Unfortunately this means leaving the car unattended, with the key in the ignition and engine running.

This is precisely the blackout scenario I was anticipating:

Unfortunately, back in March 2010, CHP was still on trial, so I put in a standard gas boiler. Now I have to contemplate a diesel/petrol generator.

£159.98 inc VAT. The 12V charger function means it does flat car battery as well, I presume. I vaguely remember seeing a generator in Costco.

    100 tea light candles for £1.73 !!

NB. Not available online! So it's a loss leader to get you to visit their store. Don't forget you need matches or lighters.

I have a portable Calorgas heater, with a spare 15kg bottle for swap-over, so it won't be too bad.

Ooo lucky you <jealous as sin> I love a good coal fire. Enjoy.

I shall have to avail myself of the coal fire at the nearest pub then :-)
