Industrial action to the national grid

I found the power cuts during the 3 day week, exciting. I remember one night sat playing board games by candle light with our elderly neighbour. There was a knock at the door, a friend asking why our lights were still off, the electric had come back on, we were having such a good time we hadn't noticed. We do Earth Hour here the children love it.

Great news!
So heating then? Although we have gas heating the switch is electric. We were sick of it over the snow / xmas period. It was freezing in our house.
So another load of gas canisters, candles matches etc will have to be bought again :mad:0 -
I`ll be putting extra cool packs in the freezer so I can use some in the fridge and I think I`ll put the candles ,wind up radio, tinned soup etc in a box and have them close to the gas canister and back packing stove. Plan of action will be to `live `in a very small snug that we have, as body heat plus a candle will keep it warm
Other than that it will just be `wait and see`0 -
.....If the sewage workers come out as well then even I will start to panic :eek:0

Same here Kittie
Its a good job we have thick blankets and sleeping bags in the house or we would be in hitter so to speak.
We still have the camping stove so thats good at least.
Oh and at least we have no worries in the "nine month" department , got that sorted last year:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -

I shudder. Not for nights with no tv or light or heat, but for my freezer contents.
How long will power cut last I wonder. does this mean I shoud lay off whoopsies for the freezer, or fill it up in the hope the solid frozen mass keeps it all ok.

If you fill plastic bottles (coke, juice, milk) that you've washed out well with water, you could put those in your freezer now to fill up all the gaps. Not only will it make your freezer run more efficiently, if the power does go off, you'll have solid blocks of ice in it which will keep everything colder. And you'll even have a fresh water source in case they go on strike as well! :rotfl:Once it's all over, you can just sit them to defrost in the garden and use 'em on your plants - and all for free!0 -
I wasn't born until 1980 so don't remember the three day weeks, but we did seem to have a lot of power cuts in Ireland in the 80s and the house was always stocked up with candles, flasks of boiled water and a camping gas stove.
Luckily we have a gas hob these days so needn't be worried about dinner/a cuppa. But our gas heating needs electricity to run all the various bits including the water pump and I've no idea how you'd hook any of it up to a car battery0
